I am about 10 days into a fishless cycle on a 75 gallon planted tank. I added Dr. Tim's ammonia chloride and then Tetra safe start plus. I saw no change so a few days ago I did a water change, added the ammonia chloride to 2 ppm, and then also added Dr. Tim's one and only bacteria.

My ammonia levels are around 2ppm and haven't changed at all. I have 0 nitrites. But to my surprise, I just tested nitrates assuming they would be 0 and they are at about 40 ppm!

Any idea what is going on with my cycle? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tested your tap water? The nitrates might be coming from there.

You are absolutely correct. Same readings from my tap water. Thanks for clearing that up!
