Fishless cycle clogging filter

So, I'm a week into my FISHLESS cycling of a 10gal tank (no live plants, yet). I added TSS at the start and 3-4 ppm Ammonia. I'm starting to see Nitrates (10-20ppm) and reduced ammonia (<1ppm). What is odd is that my filter is clogging up. It's an Aqueon Quietflow 10. Is it just slime buildup? I rinsed it in a small portion of tank water, but it clogs up the next day. I do have sand substrate. Do you think it could be the culprit?

Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like you need to open it up and do some maintenance. Could be anything.

Open up the unit? It's pumping, just running over top of the filter.

That's my question.

But what does it look like ? Can you take a clear picture ?

Sorry, I meant a picture of what’s clogging the filter on the filter itself.

I just removed the intake tube to avoid sand. I'll replace it with fish. Probably with pre filter on it.

Sand shouldn’t get into your filter. Unless it wasn’t rinsed, then it’s all the dirt from the sand and not necessarily the sand itself.

It was well rinsed

I wonder if it is just some sludge building up. Maybe take the filter apart, make sure nothing is blocking the impeller then look at the sponges to see if something is building up, just don’t let them dry out while you work or the bacteria will die.
