Fish that look like koi

I have a 29 gallon tall fish tank and really love the look of koi but they are too big. Are their any fish that are smaller and look very similar to koi?

Koi guppies sprang to mind in an instant. Koi is literally in the name! They’re a variant of guppy that share a similar colouration to some variants of koi. Guppies are very personable similar to koi so they’ll replicate their little personalities too.

A male koi betta is also an option if you wish to keep a more laid back, gentle flowing tank. I wouldn’t add any koi guppies with him though, should you choose to keep one.

Kohaku koi swordtail would be a good choice

Do you mean coloration (black/orange/red/white) or body shape. Because there is also just plain of each color koi.

Both coloration and body shape just with smaller size

My first thought would also be koi gups. My second would be koi angelfish. erinw347 breeds koi angles, don't know how he's selling.

Some medaka rice fish can look just like tiny koi when viewed from above. They’re very rewarding fish to keep. They have beautiful colors, breed easily, and have a super cute personality. They also don’t require a heater.

a 29 gallon can house a single fancy goldfish (not a common). So basically a small koi

I would also go with a koi betta. You could maybe house a pair of angels but IMO a little too small of a tank.

Are you wanting a single "show" fish (at maturity), or some smaller schooling types, so that you can have multiple fish?

Is (or will) the tank be heated?

I like koi angels they have the same pattern as koi just sometimes different colors and body shape than koi. I don’t know if a 30 gallon is big enough though because some angels get really big.

This tank is not heated and either or. I would be fine with a "show fish" or a community tank

Where can I buy medaka rice fish. Because I have never seen or heard of them before.

You can get them at places like Aquatic Arts, but they’re pretty expensive there.
You might be able to find some members here that might sell them for cheaper.

If it will be unheated, I would go with medaka, and I wouldn't do an angel even in a heated 29g.
