Help! One of our zebra danios scales's look funny. They are kind of sticking up a little. Plus one of them (not sure if it's the same one) had what looked like little white hairs sticking out of it's mouth! AHH! What is going on with my fish???

Plus, are there any web sites that actually have pictures of fish diseases? I wish I could just just match illness with picture!

please help!

HI Jamie,
It sounds like your fish has a didease called "Dropsy" and "cotton mouth" if you do a google search on both of these types of diseases you will probably find pictures so you can match with what your own fish look like hope it helps
Thanks Sasha

Are the hairs more like a fungus or are they few and solid? If they're like tiny threads, they could be some types of worms. There are parasites in the form of worms and they may stick out of the fish's body in various places.

It doesn't look like fungus... I'm guessing the worms are more likely. plus he's not dead, and it sounds like cotton mouth kills them pretty quick

I think maybe he's got some kind of localized infection in his scales... it's not dropsy where all of them are sticking up, it's only three or four. My poor guy!

plus, I looked at the pictures and i'm not sure that it's worms either! UGH! I need a fish vet stat!

Any suggestions on a treatment?
plus, our q-tank isn't cycled yet. Would putting one fish in it make that big of a difference, plus would the stress of sepreating a zebra danio from his scoal be too much for him when he's sick? My guess is that if he's got something wrong then, the whole tank has it by now neways right? so shouldn't I just treat the tank he's in now?

Confused,
~Jamie

HI I personally couldnt tell a suggestion on treatment as I wouldnt like to tell you something and it went wrong best to go with your instincts,
I can tell you what my partner did for a molly that had cotton mouth and wasn't eating.
(she took out 85% of the water refilled the tank treated with melafix, and the next day the cottonmouth had cleared up and the others that showed signs of it were fine, whether it was coincidense or not I am not sure but this was our instinct to do this) and don't recommend this action it was our own (instinct) that we thought was best and it worked for us.
