Fish out of Water, What Should I Do?

I've adopted a new betta since the death of my last one, but discovered he had jumped out of his tank. I assumed he had died for he was unresponsive and dry. But to my shock and delight/horror he flopped when he got wet. He is now back in his tank. Battered but alive. What should I do? Will he recover? He is breathing heavily but not swimming much at all. He only moves when the Corys bump into him.

The only thing you can really do is wait. Anything can stress the fish to the point of death. If you turn off the lights it could help.

Isolation could work, but my concern is that it would introduce more stress.

I had a guppy jump out once. We found him in time and put him back in the tank. He survived the outing but did quickly develop a fungal issue. Keep an eye out for signs of infection not only in your betta but the rest of your fish in case betta introduced anything to the tank. Maybe try to do extra water changes if possible. Good luck

May be provide him with a resting area high in the tank so he won't need to work as hard to get to the surface to breath.
Best of luck to both of you.

Any news, how is he doing?
He passed on, thank-you to everyone for the advice. But sadly it seems the fall from the aquarium was simply to much for the poor little thing and he died in the night.

Thank-you. This is the first time I’ve ever had a betta jump from the tank. From now on I’ll have to be far more carful about how high I let the water line get.

I am sorry you had the situation of fish jumping out and hope it recovers this time?

A light hearted video that might help understand how these fish move around and why many of us have lids on all tanks.

The sad thing is I do have a lid on my tank, he was able to trick shot him self through a tiny gap between the filter and the lid wall. But thank-you.
