Fish keep escaping/jumping out of tank!

Hi,

Have recently set up an Aqua Nano 40 tank, cycled it for a few weeks and put in tropical fish a couple weeks ago.

All has mostly been fine and checking Ammonia/Nitrates etc. The filter system a couple times has needed cleaning out and a water change done because the 1c carbon filter was clogging up and causing the water level in the filtration system at the back to drop and the water in the main tank to rise slightly. I have managed with these fine.

One thing I cannot seem to get my head around is that my fish are escaping?! I found one had jumped far from the tank a week ago and then today I have lost 3 more?! I keep the lid on all the time and it is only off for 10 seconds while I feed them. There is the tiniest gap where the glass sits on top but the gap is so small I’m not sure how they could propel themselves so far across the floor through that gap! The water in the main tank does not rise that high when the filter has been clogged!

Has anyone experienced this?!

Maybe stress

I had my fish do that due to stress

If fish really feel the urge, they will jump out of any hole their bodies will fit through. You could try covering the hole.
I agree with vampireshrimpfan, stress is generally the reason fish jump out of the tank.

Use ceramic wrap or something to cover the hole they’re jumping out of. I agree it’s probably stress causing them to do this. Do they have plenty of hiding spots?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for quick responses! Sad to know my fish are feeling stressed. Been out of the fish game for a while now.

They have a bit of wood to hide under plus plants. I think I will reduce the amount of food I am giving to put less strain on the filter and see if that makes them a little happier.

Yes, try only feeding what they will consume entirely in 2 minutes or so. If your filter is sucking up excess food you are over feeding.

You might try giving them additional cover in the tank. Rooted plants, floating plants or hardscape.
