HI guys. I was turning off my tank lights and noticed 2 of my fish have ich! How can I treat it? The local fish store, petsmart and petco are all closed until friday. I turned the temp up to 80.
I will post pics in the morning if they hold still enough.
Tank:
Size - 20 gallons
Temp - 80 (normally 78)
Substrate - sand
Plants - live (3 amazon sword, 2 java fern, 1 moss ball)
Ammonia - 5
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 10

Stock:
2 mollies
2 swordtails (1 has ich on fins)
1 kilifish (has ich on fins)
2 kulI loaches
3 otocinclus
1 bn pleco (baby, 1inch long)
The loaches are the newest, added roughly a month ago

Water changes - once a week, 25-40%

Ich is unaffected by heat till you get to 86 some strains take 88. Beings you have fish that probably wouldn't last 2 weeks at that temp I would turn your heat down and wait till Friday to get the meds.

You will want to slowly bring the temperature up to 86 degrees. The next day start doing water changes daily for the next week or so.

What meds would you recomend?

HI there! Ich is really easy to cure without meds.
Turn the temperature up to 86-87F. Vacuum the substrate every other day (large WC not necessary, this is to such up the free swimming ich because they will sink and sit in/on your substrate). I would recommend adding salt to your tank, but you have some fish that are sensitive to salt... perhaps just do half doses.

Be warned that it will get worse before it gets better. It should clear up in 2 weeks max. If for some reason it doesn't work or you really want to use meds instead (dont do both methods at once), I recommend Kordon ich cure.

Edit: also, I saw you listed ammonia as 5. Is this 5ppm ammonia?! If so, you really need to do WCs to keep it below 1ppm and use prime to detoxify. This is probably the cause of the ich (ammonia stressed the fish and weakened the ammune system, giving ich a chance to step in).

Hold the phone, your ammonia is 5?? You need to do a water immediately. Also, you’re overstocked a bit so 25-40% once a week will not be enough. This also causes stress, and then you get Ich.

Should I move all my fish to a 10 gallon hospital tank? Or just treat the whole 20gallon?

Ive never had ich before

Sorry ment point 5! My water changes are normally on thursdays. Ill be doing 75% this time!
I'm moving the mollies to a larger tank soon. Theyre growing out still

Moving them to a smaller tank will only make things worse. Usually I to am for the heat method but I don't think the ottos could handle it. Also the salt thing it really doesn't kill ich so again with your stocking I would not add any.

Do you think moving the ottos and treating them in the 10 at normal temp would be ok? And treat the rest in the 20 at 86 or so degrees?

I guess you could it just seems to me that you would be just making more work for yourself since you have to treat all your fish.

It may seem quicker to treat with heat but in reality it will be 8-10 hours till you would get the temp up in your tank and then another 12-24 hours till they go threw their life cycle were they would be in the free swimming for the heat to kill them. So basically were at Friday morning.

For ich that I’ve had in the past I can almost religiously recommend the Kordon Ich-Plus. It’s the one with Formalin AND the malachite green. Hard stuff to find in town but not so hard online. All I did was pop the carbon bag out of my filter, dose the tank per instructions twice in the first 24 hours then every 24 hours after that until there were no signs of it for a couple days. It’s a DREAM. Never had to jack the heat up either, which is cool because my heater can be very finicky when trying to set to a desired temp.

I also treat the quarantine tank when I purchase new fish to make sure there’s nothing I don’t want getting into my display tank.

**(Don’t use it with invertebrates or live rock)

You can actually use it safely with freshwater inverts.
I've had no choice but to use it with my shrimps and snails.
Though I know there are specific snails who are sensitive, I believe mysteries are.
Don't recall.

Cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, CPO craws and some other types of shrimp are perfectly safe in doses of this.
I honestly don't measure exactly 5ml, I just do it by capfuls.
I'm sure it's closer to 7ml than 5.
Last time my 55 with ghost shrimp had ich, I was dosing every 12 hours.
No adverse affects.
Though on occasion if the fish is very weak, you can get columnaris or another fungus/bacteria just due to the fact that your fish is already ill then put under med stress.
You can use rid ich and other kordon ich products with kanaplex as well without deaths, but of course, it's not recommened.

Lol just stating what it said on the bottle. I use it with my snails and all’s well, but I just didn’t want someone to blame me for it killing their animals.

That would indeed be unfortunate.
I find it slightly comical when someone blames another for something that happened to them.
They weren't exactly forced to follow your advice even if they trusted you.
They still could have chose to double check and make sure or decide not to listen lol
I also find it's important to remeber death happens anyway. Regardless of how it happens it's going to happen. No one is prepared for it. I personally find it illogical to blame any being for a death unless it was done with purpose.
But it is understandable.
I simply thought perhaps you were under the impression that it definitely kills them.
Of course each creature is different and reacts a different way.
Oh ich you awful being.

No, no, not at all. I just know that if it’s used incorrectly there could definitely be some unfortunate consequences.
