Fish Going Into Powerheads When Off

So I almost had two fish killed the other day when I was changing from one stationary powerhead to the Hydor branded powerheads. They were in the smallest outflow opening and they were out of water without me knowing for almost 20 minutes. Somehow I found them before they died and got them back into the tank. Now those same fish ( peacock gudgeons ) are somehow in the hydor powerhead which if was on would have blended them up. How can I go about this and keep them out?

Maybe try stretching a section of nylon stocking over the opening? It wouldn't restrict water flow, but should be enough to keep your little explorers away from danger!

Sounds like a decent idea to try. I’d hate to not use the powerheads so I need to figure something out.

On a brighter note, I figured they were going in there for a reason and this morning my two females left the powerhead and my male was in there alone.....guarding the eggs.
