Do you find that some types of media are better for certain subjects than others?

Good question!
And do you have a favorite?

Do you find that some types of media are better for certain subjects than others?
Yes! I think ballpoint pen is very easily controllable, and mechanical pencil even more so. In terms of drawing subjects, I find the structure of pen to be excellent for drawing things with feathers or fur. And for scale critters, a good old dollop of white acrylic gauche and some water colours are always my first choice. For detailing up coloured pieces, I recently got a set of 60 (artgasm!!) Polychromos Faber Castell Wax-Free pencils and holy moly I am in love. They blend so nicely and with the current paper I use, I can layer these bad boys up to 20 times (ahhh!!!!!)

So in short,
for furry and feathery dudes - bp pen,
for other animals and colour in general - Watercolour, gouache and poly's
Sometimes some fineliners (Micron or Graphix are good) are super handy!
Man made doo dads - Lead/graphite pencils.
And for the fine details - some good old fashion rotary pens (pure bliss)

Oh and p.s., for emotional driven things, black Indian ink is my go to guy. Sometimes oils? But mainly ink

Good question!
And do you have a favorite?
Yes I do! I never leave the house without three things. A bottle of I (+ brush) , a ballpoint pen and a pencil. These are my mains and boy I'd be dead without them.
I can't actually pick an absolute above all favourite, as it depends on subject and mood ^_^

Until they broke, I had a set of antique Rotary Pens and they were my pride and joy. I filled them up manually with pure black Indian ink and sometimes even made my own mixes for subjects. I has sizes ranging from 1.0mm to 0.02mm and they were the most extraordinary set of pens I ever had. I loved them so much! Gosh I miss them...

I've decided that on my trip to a marine biology lab today and tomorrow (so happy!) That I'll draw all of my fish, just to catalogue them ^_^

This is the first one, Anna (named my lil bro) one of my female guppies!

I'll be doing these as a side project for whenever I get some free time ^_^

Can wait to see drawings of your fishes! Looks like you have nice activities for your summer, diving, visit to a marine lab...I need to go to work tomorrow and it's already 11:00PM here. I'm missing these summers off when I used to go to school!

Hehe thanks! Since I'm in Transition Year in school, ive organised a lot of stuff for the summer months! Now only did I spend the day in a marine science lab, but I got to slip into some physics lectures! One on astrophysics and pulsars (which was like brain exploding extreme physics ) and one on quantum physics and the guy was doing quantum Levitation demonstrations and I was so happy because I never thought I'd get the chance to see it in action! It was so amazing. Plus, the physics guys gave me a 3D your of the city, the college, and the OBSERVABLE AND KNOWN UNIVERSE. I'm ready for my existential crisis now! Oh my lawdy I was freaking out! It was just mind blowing stuff. Now I can't decide between art, biology and physics!

My two cents here. You're good at art. Keep it as a side interest and hobby it will keep you from going crazy . But it's hard to make a career of. Biology or physics are great broad sciences with lots of places to specialize. Meanwhile you might look into etsy for selling your art pieces. A little extra income on the side is always great and you can expand when you retire with a great pension from your science job.

How about Astrobiology? Then you can do your art on the side! Better yet, do the Astrobiology and then illustrate scientific articles or works of speculative fiction

I already sell on Etsy, but I've neglected my store recently and I have never sold anything on there I pretty much get by on local commissions...

OOOOOO you've piqued my interest once again Aquaphobia! This sounds amazing! No clue where I'd do it though... unless I can find it in UL or NUIG i'm a little stumped I'll have to research this further. Thanks for the idea! (You may have just given me a legitimate direction for an occupation!)

I'm not sure where you can find an actual department of astrobiology, Berkeley must have one! But you can definitely take the pieces that are needed for it like organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biology, planetary science. Basically, all the really fun stuff;D

I guess so! Doing courses in biology, biochemistry and physics would definitely feed into astrophysics. Berkeley is a little far away for me The farthest i'm willing to go to is Galway, and I'm in Tipperary, in Ireland Being a home bird ain't always that great
