First Time With Salt, I Have Some Questions.

Hey guys it's my first time posting on this part of the forum.

I just got my first killifish last week and I've had a few bumps in the road with him and have decided to try a mild treatment of aquarium salt and paraguard. I've never used salt as a water additive before so this is something new to me. It's a 3.4 gallon tank and I'm using API aquarium salt. The first night I took out a cupful of his tank water and stirred 1 tsp of salt until it was completely dissolved. I poured half in and another half after a half hour. Last night I did the same bringing the total amount of salt to 2 tsps. I didnt want to add any more because I couldn't find any information on killifish sensitivity to salt. He responded well after the second dose of salt and I think it would be healthy to keep a lesser amount of salt in the tank at all times after hes healed but I understand freshwater keepers have different opinions on that.

What do you think about health benefits of doing this? I should note I have amazon sword and anubias in the tank that I'm hoping will be okay.
Does anyone with a planted tank keep low doses of salt?
My main question however is the effect salt has on my apI test kit. Will it have any effect on the accuracy of my test kit?
Lastly this may seem dumb, but does salt ever adversely effect the BB in the tank (not a large overdose, just reasonable amount)?

Thank you for anyone who can help me out on this one!

What were the bumps in the road? What are his symptoms?

I wouldn't describe salt and paraguard a particularly mild treatment.

Hi

What do you think about health benefits of doing this?

There is zero proof that adding salt as a preventative has any benefits in fact prolonged exposure to salt can be detrimental.

Your killifish is gorgeous.

Any meds can cause stress. You have to weigh up the benefits of treatment.
Salt can be effective.
Paraguard can be effective.

Most times I recommend clean, clean, clean, water; and Melafix.
Melafix really does soothe fish.
It also has mild anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.
Often that is all you need.

Softly, softly.

Not a fan of anything with " fix " in its name, the only thing they usually fix is the makers bank balance.

Hes been doing much better since I started this course of treatment. I'm going to continue salt until I see his lip is healing with no fungus. Then I will remove all the salt via multiple water changes over a few days. I can't use certain medications because of the plants and also dyes. My important question about the salt is if it effects water testing. Can anyone answer that for me?

I should also note the amount of salt I dosed is about half of what was on the directions for "normal" usage. And when people use for medication they say like 3 tsp per gallon instead of 1 tsp so keep in mind what I dosed his tank was very little because I was unsure of how killifish handle it.
