My first attempt at an aquarium what can I improve on?
Inhabitants
15 neon tetras
5 zebra loaches
2 plecos, one male one female
Betta
200litre aqua one kit set.

Mixed plant species.

Betta seems energetic and curious but only if I'm in the room, he loves displaying his beautiful plumes when I'm around but I catch him sleeping if I'm not in the room.

What can I do to give him something to interact with/play with?
Want him to be as happy as possible.
Tank has been established about 9 months now.
And yes I need to do some trimming.

For the betta, I'd get an anubias and glue it to the wood in such way that the top leaves are almost, but not quite, touching the water surface - it would serve as a betta hammock (see my artistic rendering below :D). I hear bettas love snoozing near water surface. I know you asked about something to play with, but the boy likes his naps and there's nothing wrong with it, so you might as well embrace and make his favourite hobby as comfortable as you can :D.

For aesthetics, I'd suggest replanting the hornsworth in more orderly fashion. The one in front of the lotus appears especially out of place - being taller it would be better off in the back. I like the center composition, except those thin spiky plants that are all over the place - I'd gather them all in one bunch and plant them together, that way they'd look more flattering.

For your first tank that is lovely !!! Mine certainly didn’t look Thai good.

With the hornswort / sessiliflora plant you can cut and replant the tops, when it sends runners out wait until it’s established and has roots and remove from the mother plant and replant it.

I agree with V1K’s comment about the Anubias higher up for the betta , that’s a good idea . Love the artwork too ;)

Noted and yes he does seem to like napping near the surface, I'll get another anubias for him, closer to the top.

Red lotus in left of tank not doing as well as the green one in the right, isn't need some ferts.
You tube certainly helped this tank along considering a bubbler for the fish to play in.

Lovely, looks balanced and lightly stocked so I'd say extremely good tank for first one. Also you have chosen something bigger than 20 liters to begin with it's a delight and easier to manage

They are dwarf bristle nose plecos.

Currently considering adding just a few more tetras to get them schooling well, mabey another 10.
And definitely want some top floaters thinking Salvinia natans.
Did try duck weed but as shocking as it might seem it did not spread as well as I wanted.

Some minor tidying and hiding of the filter lines and a black curtain for the stand and I think I'll be happy with it.

Got some ideas for a second tank, considering discus....
Eyeing up an 800ltr atm.

I could not agree more! If I could go back in time, I would skip the "starter kit" phase when I got a 5 gallon, then moved up to a 10 gallon in less than a year. In the beginning, I thought 5 gallon was the sweet spot taking into consideration the tank was placed on top of IKEA furniture instead of a real stand. Now, the same shelf is sporting two tanks, a 14G and a 10G. In retrospect, I could have gone with a 20 or even 30 gallon tank right from the start. 200 liters is definitely a great canvas to work and learn with.

That tank gives me delight like you wouldn't imagine.
Fish for thought definitely enspired me to make sure it's a playground for the fish as opposed to it being a water prison.
