Homemade goldfish food idea

I currently feed my goldfish hikarI pellets but my oranda goldfish tends to often get swim bladder from this and any other floating foods. Could I soak these pellets and then mix then with the following ingredients and freeze into ice cube trays? I currently feed a frozen cube mix of veg that I buy from my lfs but its costly I also feed blood worms, peas, sweet potato and zucchinI and a slice of orange every now and then.

Could I soak pellets with some of the following foods and freeze into ice cube trays?

Vegetables: (cooked, shelled, pelled etc and cut into bite sized pieces)
- zucchini, spinach, garlic, carrot, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, sweet potato, peas

Proteins:
- blood worms, tubifex worms, brine shrimp, daphnia

Anything else I can add to these lists that are good for my goldies

Ive heard u can also buy vegetable baby foods such as carrot, peas or green beans to include in homemade goldfish food is this true?

Can I use cooked garlic cloves instead of garlic guard which ive heard is good for goldies but never seen it instore?

There very helpful thanks I have a question though.. From reading those links a lot of people use human suppliments in there fish food and I was wondering if any of the below suppliments I have on hand would be any good?

1. Blooms super kelp
- kelp extract 600mg
- dried yellow wrack seaweed 150mg

2. Natures way multivitamin

Also when u add water into recipe especially when added to gelatin I would assume the water is treated with prime etc first???

Paprika ive heard is good for boosting colour in goldfish??
Is there any other herbs that are good to include in goldfish food?

I hope ive done this right ive compiled lots of methods and ingredients lists over the last few days and have finally attempted my first batch of gel food for my 3 fancy goldies...

Ingredients:
Carrots, peas, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, garlic and 1 hokI fillet..

I also added a handful of ocean nutrition goldfish flakes, 1tsp organic kale powder, 1tsp organis spirulina powder and 2tbs organic 100% wheat germ. Combined with 2 sachets of unflavoured gelatin.

Method:
- Steamed fish and veg for 30mins and blended in blender
- shelled peas seperately and added to blender
- let cool for a bit while I did the dishes
- dissolved 2 sachets in 1/2 cup hot treated water
- added spiralina, flakes, wheat germ and kale to veg puree and mixed well
- added gelatin and mixed to combine then poured into a large flat baking tray and put in fridge to set
- I will hopefully be able to cut it into cubes and store in freezer if I got my gelatin amount correct and it sets properly

It cut well into cubes but trying to lift it out of the tray whilst maintaning the shape was difficult and messy so I spooned some of it into an icecube tray and put it into the freezer and I left the other half of the mixture on the tray but have frozen it as is.. Hoping the indentations from cutting it into squares will help when I recut it once its frozen

The goldies loved it.. However it floated for a bit before it sunk is there anyway to get to sick straight away?

Maybe soak it in some tank water before adding it to the tank or weight it down with something?

Glad your goldies like your home cooking.

Don't worry about water used. Tap is too small per feeding to kill your tank. Blanch veggies accordingly, for some plants will only expose nutrients when blanched correct.

It clouded my tank water?? Is this normal for gel foods? I feed my fish twice a day and would liketo use homemade food for every feeding but not if it clouds my water after 1 cube? Maybe ny cubes are a bit too big maybe I shouldcut them smaller?

I just made some homemade gel food for my goldfish yesterday. I got my recipe from

with some modifications.

Prepping and making the food was pretty easy but wow!, it was a real pain to cut up all that gel food and pack it away individually for the freezer. At least the fish like it but I'll have to see if the benefits of home made food out weigh the amount of work.

I cut a week's worth, then cut those up into 1cm cubes, then cut those up to bite sizes during feeding (my fish are about 3-4" long).

The food I made did disintegrate somewhat in the water. I'll be checking ammonia and nitrate levels daily to see if it's fouling the water, but so far, no probs.

I would definitely serve smaller portion if you haven't done it already. Has the ammonia or nitrates levels gone up since using homemade food?

I read some where else that to prevent disintegration you could add more gelatin. Keep in mind tho the food will get firmer, possibly more difficult to eat depending on the type and size of fish you have.
