Tank

What is the water volume of the tank? 5 Gallons
How long has the tank been running? About a month
Does it have a filter? Yes - a built in one (Trying to find the name of the tank. It's a top Fin one with an "EZ water change" where a spout pops up and pumps water out.
Does it have a heater? Yes
What is the water temperature? 77 F
What is the entire stocking of this tank? (Please list all fish and inverts.) One Male Betta

Maintenance
How often do you change the water? Once a week
How much of the water do you change? ~30-40%
What do you use to treat your water? Prime
Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water? Substrate as well

*Parameters - Very Important
Did you cycle your tank before adding fish? I brought over cycled filter media from my established tank
What do you use to test the water? API Freshwater Master Test Kit
What are your parameters? We need to know the exact numbers, not just “fine” or “safe”.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10
pH: 7.6

Feeding
How often do you feed your fish? Once a day - Small betta pellets most days and bloodworms once or twice a week
How much do you feed your fish? About five pellets a day, 2-3 small bloodworms
What brand of food do you feed your fish? Omega One freeze dried Betta treat, Aqueon Betta Food
Do you feed frozen or freeze-dried foods? Just the blood worms

Illness & Symptoms
How long have you had this fish? About a month
How long ago did you first notice these symptoms? Two days ago
In a few words, can you explain the symptoms? Seems to be finrot maybe? I'm unsure as I have never dealt with this in a fish before, and he doesn't seem to have any red streaks in his tails.
Have you started any treatment for the illness? Melafix, 1 tbsp as directed on the bottle a day.
Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase? He seemed fine and this is the first time he has shown any sign of illness.
How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all? The fins appear to be shredding, but he is still very active and loves to come to say hI and beg for food.

So I am sorry, I looked around at other topics but am kinda of skittish. This has been a rough week where I lost a new Bolivian Ram (suspect he was sick when I got him and he would not eat in my QT tank before suddenly dying) and just don't want to take any chances.

I bought a male Betta a few weeks back (named Comet) and have him housed in his very own 5-gallon tanks. He's been doing great and shows a ton of personality, but I recently noticed his fins seem to be shredding. You can see that he used to have clear edges on all his tails, but those clear rounded edges are disappearing and his fins are becoming very pointed at the tips.

I've treated with melafix for two days now (Apparently this may not be good? It worked on my sister's angel a little bit back) and just want to be sure that 1. This is finrot and 2. I am treating him correctly.

Thanks for any help!

This last photo is him when he was completely healthy a few days ago. Notice how his tail is completely clear on the edges and those parts are now missing.

Doesn't seem to be fin rot (no black edges and good water quality too). It looks like the plants are too sharp and shredding his fins.

would be a good idea to look into silk/live plants for him
java fern, anubias and java moss are super easily

dont see how he could have fin rot since you have good parameters
you could get some Indian almond leaves to help with fin re-growth, it will do a lot more than melafix will, I would just stop using the melafix all together and take all the plastic plants out

Awesome advice . I'd have to agree on all of it. Hawthorn may be of interest to the OP as well since it'll give your betta more cover.

I almost can't believe how pretty the betta is!! the tail when you first got him is GORGEOUS
Wish you luck with your regrowth!

Sorry about your ram

I had always wanted a betta but told myself I'd only ever get one if it was super gorgeous (trying to stop myself from having a tank in every room). But then I saw this guy while getting food for my big tank and had to have him haha.

I took all the fake plants out and threw an almond leaf in there (had no idea those were good for that too!) so hopefully he isn't too mad about the plants and starts to recover a bit. I'll start looking into live plants as well have always wanted to try them but my main tank has silver dollars and they can't coexist with real plants.

Guess I have some research to do Thanks everyone, I'll try to remember to post updates on the little guy.

(I was pretty sad about the ram too, and he seemed active and happy for a week or so. Sad to see him go, he had a lot of personality )

Quick, odd update. So, my betta is doing a bit better. The rest of his fins kind of deteriorated, but only the clear parts. Every part of his fin with color is just fine, and I *think* some of the clear parts are slowly growing back. He is swimming in there with an Almond leaf he likes to hide in (its naturally curled into a little tunnel) and is loving the new live plants I put in there as well.

Hopefully, his fins continue to grow back, but he seems to be feeling fine and has even started making a bubble nest, so things look up. Thanks again for all the help!
