Hi. I have a 50 gallon tank that I want to get new lighting for so I could plant it. I want to get a 48" finnex fugeray planted+, but I read that the light is not as strong with higher tanks. I want to get anubias, java fern, rotala, water wisteria, dwarf hairgrass, vals, amazon swords, and maybe some others. My tank is 21" high. Should I get the finnex ray 2? The planted+ is $120 and the ray 2 is $180. I just want to be sure the planted+ can not only support plants, but to also have good growth. No co2 by the way, only flourish as of now.

Most of your plants are low light (Rotala may need low/medium or medium light depending on species, and dwarf hairgrass won't carpet without CO2 and high light), and a Planted Plus would be fine. A Ray2 may be too much light.

I'd swap out the hairgrass for pygmy chain sword or dwarf sag if you want carpet like look.

I have a Planted Plus on my 55 gal (20" tall) and I get great growth.

    Do you have co2?

Nope! I use root tabs and dose Flourish after water changes, and that's it.

More questions before i order it: How bright would you rate it? Do you know anything about the planted plus 24/7? And how do you have yours set up? I want to lay it on my glass since its only a small window, but i want to know if it will get to all parts of the tank sufficiently.

I lay mine on the glass in the center of the tank, just behind the joint of the glass lid.

It's very bright, and better for growing plants than the 24/7 because it's at the higher par rating the entire time (instead of just a few hours with the 24/7). The 24/7 has the cool settings though.

I think you'll need more plants soon to help keep algae at bay. Any low light plant will do very well with this light, as long as you provide the proper ferts.

Probably but i have never had algae before. My main problem right now is diatoms! Its already taking over my tank.

You also haven't had a Planted Plus before :)

Diatoms should go away on their own. They're common in new aquariums.
