Fingers crossed for tomorrow

So after a few days in a vase after my girlfriend accidentally busted the old tank, Ricktavious is in a 5 gallon tank now (apparently still getting used to it though). Tomorrow will be the first day I'll get to see him in there, can't wait to see how he looks in there ;D

Also, my she has been talking about *possibly* getting another 3 gallon tank to replace the old one. If she does, there's a chance I'll get to bring home a little girl betta. Not getting my hopes up though, but it's nice to think about anyways

It's awesome that's she's hoping to replace your broken tank, maybe you can take her fish shopping with you if you go to pick out a little girl Good luck!

I think its so wonderful to see this interest in getting female Betta's. They always seem to be over looked in the LFS since the males have such showy finage. I love stopping by and checking out for a new female betta to join my group of 2 males and one female. The personalities are much different and I can say that the females are very loving and attentive to everything you are doing when you are in the room with them. Now maybe more female bettas will be rescued from those tiny cups!!
Good luck in finding a female to join your family of Betta's.

Yes, I've noticed them becoming more popular too. They are so sweet and funny. They deserve nice homes just as much as the males. The females in cups always have such sad expressions. They get so stressed in the cups they turn into a drab color with stress stripes. They change SOOO much after you get them home and put them in a nice warm tank! I think a lot of people see the females and just think they are going to stay that drab color and aren't interested. Unfortunately I think a lot of the females that do get bought are only being used by some amateur breeder who ends up getting her killed or people who want "sorority" tanks and get a couple of females who eventually stress each other and tear each other apart slowly. It makes me so sad seeing the females knowing that most of them will end up in one of these two scenarios. At least when someone on this board gets a female I know she will be loved as a pet, not just used for breeding.

since I found Honey I haven't seen any females today but a store I went to had a tank with 7 or 8 in. 2 were very stressed ( first time I had seen bars in real life) the others were stunning. All had bright eyes and beautiful healthy finnage but there was one female crown tail ( and such a stunner) that was definitely the boss of the tank! there was also a very young opaque/salmon pink one with THE most beautiful face that I fell in love with but finances cannot allow it. They had no males but the quality of the females was great. I'll visit again asap.

I agree, when I picked Ariadne out, I thought she was a blue color but instead she was a dull grey with stress bars. Now that she's been in my 10 gallon for a few days (Hermes is getting a 5 gallon on my desk), she's become this vibrant blue betta with pink tinted fins. She's already even eating off my fingertip! The Betta ladies need more good homes because they are just as sweet and mischievous as the guys.

.... and have you all noticed how really sweet these females faces are? I mean.... they are amazing! Those lil black eyes look like seal pup eyes... they just lock on to you with those eyes and burrow a hole into your heart.... and they have that dainty shaped mouth .. unlike the bullish look of the males. Dont get me wrong.. I LOVE my male Bettas too... but find the female bettas 'special' .. in their own way!
For those that haven't stopped by the Betta Photos.. here is my Precious.. you can see what I mean by that face...

yea, we read about them when we first got started and although deathco's "fish expert" sold us on a sorority tank, we've been in love with the female bettas since we got Angel.. and really, part of what got us interested was that they got overlooked so much, we felt bad they had less chance of finding good homes. it's so great to see more people want them and I know even more would want female bettas if they understood how the stress of being in the cups sucks out their color so much more than the males.

Well, since you haven't seen me excitedly posting about it yet, I haven't got the fish or tank as of now. However, saw a 5 gallon at Wal-Mart for $30 that I'll make my girlfriend get for me She's already agreed. Now I just need a table for the tank and a heater (and a fish!) and I'll be set ;D

how do you tell a female betta from a male? Especially when they are in those little cups?

The easy way is to look and see if the cup says "male" or "female."

Seriously, females are a bit smaller and have shorter tails. If you read the thread at the top that has betta pictures, you will see plenty of beautiful examples!
