Finally Showing Nitrates

So I just took a test on my twenty gallon and I have somewhere between 0 and 0.25 ammonia. It’s not quite yellow enough to be 0 but not quite green enough to be 0.25. The nitrites are 0 and the nitrates are 10. I’m thinking I need to do a partial water change.
Is that correct? The fact that I finally have nitrates means that my tank is finally cycling right?

Is this a fish-in cycle that you are doing? Have you tested your tap water for nitrates?

So long as you do not have any nitrates in your water, it would appear you are very close to being cycled.

Many people seem to have a very difficult time getting rid of that last .25ppm of ammonia. But if you use Prime, you can just add it to your tank every 24 hours (so long as ammonia stays under 1ppm) your fish would be safe from ammonia exposure.

I have no nitrates on my tap water. Yes this is a fish in cycling. It’s been a long road, four months. I did some thing gs wrong. I learned along the way and would have changed some things if I had known more about it.

Believe me, you are far, far, far from being the first member to say that. Myself included.

That makes me feel better. Even though I made the mistake of overstocking my tank before it was cycled I must say, I took responsibility for keeping the fish safe by taking tests every day and doing many many water changes to keep them safe. I had no other tank to put some of them in so I did what I had to do to keep them as healthy as possible and they all have stayed healthy.
