Fin Rot?

Susie21663

Back again about my betta. He is doing so much better from the bladder bloat and is swimming all around finally. Last night I notice this on his top fin since he is finally able to swim. Is this fin rot starting? Did he snag it when hanging around the filter to keep himself propped up? It doesn’t look any worse this morning. Thanks! All the reading I’ve done and I still don’t know what I’m doing.

Bettamay

It looks by the clean cuts in the fin that he might be tail biting. Do you have a picture of him before he got this?

No I don’t I just got him Sunday and never got a good look at his top fin because of the bladder bloat. I don’t know if it was there or not. He’s alone in his tank.

Hmmmmm.

I would say it’s probably fin biting due to stress, or that’s just the general shape of his fins. If the cup you got your betta from had a species name, you could probably search it up and look at the pictures of its tail.

If you don’t I don’t think it’s the general shape of his fin though. The top fin is different from his tail fin, where it is more cut at the top than the bottom. I don’t think it’s fin rot either, because finrot affects the whole fin rather than just a section.

It doesn't look like he's biting his fins to me. When bettas bite their fins it looks like small, semi-circle chunks missing and it's usually from the caudal fin, not the dorsal fin.

I agree that it also doesn't look like fin rot right now, so it could be physical damage from getting snagged on the filter like you suggested. I would keep an eye on it, and increase your water changes to 3-4 times per week while it heals to prevent infection. You could also add Indian Almond leaves to you aquarium, they are said to promote healing and are very beneficial for bettas.
