Fin rot or another nasty disease?

My son has a betta in a ten gallon tank. With the beta, is 2 African dwarf frogs, and 2 guppies. Everything has been fine and kosher, he was swimming around and eating and being normal yesterday. Today, we couldn't find him in the tank, so I Pulled the lid off, and poked around a little. (My son has tank decorations, fake plants along the back wall.) The betta (Sushi) was found against the filter, all of his fins are gone and he went from a lovely red color to bleached out pink/white. The fish have been together for a long time, set on a feeding schedule and a lights on/off schedule.

Help! Please?

Welcome to fishlore!

I looked on your profile, and you have listed that the ten gallon tank had been set up since June 26, 2012, so this tank has just recently been set up? Has this tank been cycled prior to adding the fish? Have these fish been together in a different tank before (since you write that they have been together a long time, and yet the tank was set up on June 26)? Just trying to clarify this since a tank which is newly set up and where newly acquired fish have recently been added has different issues than a tank that has been set up for a while and where nothing has changed recently.

What are the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/ph test results in this tank? Do you have a liquid test kit (not test strips which are inaccurate)?

Could you also post a photo of your betta if possible? Sometimes it is easier to tell from a photo what is wrong than from a description.

Thanks for the welcoming JoannaB. The tank they were in was recently set up, yes, but the fish had been together in a before, least the Beta and the two guppies. My son had them all in a one gallon, desktop tank. They've been together there for a good 3-4 months. The betta has since died. Someone else I talked to says it was stress. Maybe the addition of the frogs and the change of tanks? I'm not sure. The tank was cycled for a little over a week, with the Tetra Safe Start. I had the test strips. Though am getting an actual kit when I go to the store today. According to the strips, at the time, my tank was set and ready, safely.

Strips are not reliable at all. Get yourself an API master kit.

Even in a 10 gallon, if it was not cycled, with a heater and filter, the fish could die from stress related diseases or ammonia poisoning.

Going forward, I would advise that you not house a betta with the guppies because they are incompatible. Also, the ADF should have their own 10 gallon tank as it is difficult for them to get the proper amount of food given their poor eyesight and slow movements.

I'm sorry you lost the betta.

Yes, I have learned on the strips, getting the API master kit for sure.

Looking into another tank for the ADF, I just spent a bit reading up on them. So that will be changing as well.

Fishkeeping is a constant learning process. Once you get most of the "stuff" under your belt, it goes a lot more smoothly.

So I'm learning! But I'm loving every minute of it and find myself looking over other peoples posts simply for more info! I got, literally, handed 3 fish tanks in the span of less then a month. Much to my excitement! Though I am quickly learning this and that and that and this! The dos and don'ts, they must haves and don't needs. Much appreciation to everyone here and all the help, and thank you Tigress!
