Fin Rot medication and swordtail fry

My swordtail recently gave birth to a healthy looking batch of fry, and my other female is going to burst any day now. So with all these new fish, a problem has arisen (surprise, eh?) A guppy I had in the tank nipped one of the pregnant females fins, it has since deteriorated a little bit. The tips are white and rather jagged, but with it having already stopped I'm thinking the vita-chem I've been adding has helped her along somewhat.

If it does get worse, can I medicate with fry in the tank? I know this is where a quarantine tank would be best, but I simply don't have room for anymore tanks, and our betta's are taking up the rest of the areas where we may put a tank.

I'd suggest rather than medicating just do daily 50% water changes. Reasoning is that the better water quality and removal of disease causing bacteria in the water achieved by waterchanges will help their immune system.

Best of luck

You could try to under medicate drastically (as not only the fry, but the female who has given birth, and hte other who is about to give birth, will be particularly weak). Also, if your pH is higher than 7.0, then you'll really need to under medicate all the more.

you could try: for treating the fin rot. would also be helpful along with continuing the vitachem daily.

Well that little bit of fin rot has healed with the vita-chem and water changes I've been giving. But I've run into another, possibly more serious problem - especially since I have over 20 fry now in a breeder net.

One of the platies in my tank seems to have very slight white puffs on his body. I'm assuming ich... what would my best course of action be? Again, I have no room anywhere for a quarantine tank for the fry so I have to find something that works this way.

I've got Fungus Clear, Fungus Eliminator, and Maracyn. Which of those would be best, or would something else be better?

Treating an adult fish for what actually sounds like fungus, while keeping fry in the same tank is just not the smartest thing to do.. I honestly think the time has come for you to make a decision.. either make space for a quarantine/nursery tank, to ensure healthy fry or separate sick fish from the healthy.. or keep them all in the same tank, treat it and hope they all survive.. sorry, wish I could sugarcoat it for you but if you want to do what's right for your fish, you should consider having a nursery tank( a 3 gal. would be fine) as well as a quarantine tank to cover all your bases in ensuring good health for your livebearers and their fry.

- this is what I'd use to treat the fungus. It's the safest med that I can think of that will still have a shot at being effective. The fry may need treated anyway with the chance that they're already sick but not showing symptoms. I'd also use vitachem if you have it and treat the water with novaqua+ or stresscoat in addition to the regular water conditioner. I think once something like this shows up, there is a good chance all the tank inhabitants are at the least probable for having it.
