Fin damage or natural fin shape?

Strider1520

The colors and health are really starting to shine on Mr. Bean. Turning into a beautiful boy. He was slightly older, size wise, so longer in cup but after almost 2 weeks is settling in and eating, swimming well. I do have a couple of questions though. He wasn’t marked as far as tail type at chain store, so can you tell tail type? Main question is does he look like he has tail damage on fins or does the ragged look look normal? His tank was seeded and cycled (producing trace to 5 ppm nitrate). Eats well and getting regular 30% WC every 5 days or so on 5 gallon tank. Prime and 5ml/gallon of fritz dark water almond leaf extract to help if he does have fin damage. Temp 80-81 f. Thanks for any help. First 2 pictures were last night and last two were a week ago. Do fins look okay? I have not seen any biting. Just looks like lower caudal fin is more symmetrical and little less ragged than upper caudal.

I would definitely watch it close, like you are. The only thing I know that could be a little better is that water temp. Maybe try to get it down to 78. 80-81 is on the high end.

To me personally he looks like a delta tail, though I could be wrong.

The tail looks ragged to me, not like a normal tailshape that I’ve ever seen. The large nip that is missing made me think tail biting at first, but since the rest is so uneven I wonder if his fins are just a bit beat up as a result of the poor water conditions of the cup.

If you’d like, try boosting the water changes up to daily or every other day and you should see some new fin regrowth. Clean water and time is all you really need, and the IAL will help as well. Stunning fish.

Also search the tank for any thing with sharp edges. Such as plastic plants or rocks
