Filtration for Red Eared Slider ?

I currently have an aqua clear 70 filtering my turtle tank.. The results are satisfactory at best.. I would like a filter than can filter at least 200 gallons per hour. Maximize the filtration media (mechanical mostly) and provide a bypass or safety bypass for when it gets clogged. I know I need a bigger tank as I only have a 40 gallon breeder tank right now for him and I would like the filter to be able to move to the next tank when it gets upgraded as well.

No turtle experience but I always have 2 filters per tank (for fish). One main one, and one smaller one. I do this for cycling mainly (so I can rob the filter pad off the smaller one), but it has the added benefit of increased water agitation and filtering. Would that be a suggestion for you (one powerful one, and a couple of small ones)? Or are we talking poooop factory turtle ville, here?

I could fit another 70 next to the one I have now. I am still geeked that I found a heater he could not break so once this filtration thing gets sorted I should have a happy turtle for more than 5 days when I have to drain all the gunk and do my major cleaning...

I would ideally like to have a way to clean the water.. He is big and messy.. More water would help the situation but it is not in the budget right now and a custom tank is a bit off right now as well..

 

OK, I'll take it back about him being a great pet. I didn't take the Poop Factory turtle ville factor into account. 5 days and it's all clogged up? You need to feed him more white bread and less red hot chilli, man, it's the only way out!

Just think about having to do all your business in your room.. With no toilet.. I think 5 days would do it for you as well.. LOL!! When I can he will get his 200 gallon tank and be happy.. ;D

 

Shame you can't house-train them to do it in a little separate container type area. They live so old they must have some serious learning powers. That would be really cool!

 

Yeah he is pretty smart.. When we let him run around in the house he doesn't mess or anything. We have had him out running around the house for hours on end and never once did he do his business on the floor. ;D

He is a good pet but requires a lot of care.

 

He does sound clever. Would he really not be able to do it in a special area of his tank? That could be a great pet teaching project! Would be great if I could even contemplate teaching my mollies to only poop in the filter compartment, then jump back in the main water!

 

I have a RES in a 29 gal. and have this filter in the tank:



I put the filter in the left back corner. This causes the water to circulate in a circle around the tank, and keeps the water debris free. Once a week, I do a 100% water change and also clean the rocks on the bottom. The filter works well, but the water still needs to be changed as it discolors.

 

I have the same problem with my turtle and I am looking fo similar answers exept my tank is like 75 gallons and it turns lime green in about 8 days
