Filters and tank upgrade

I'm looking to up from my 25 litre to a 70 litre. My 25 litre has a filter up to 40 litres and the 70 litre will have a filter for upto 80 litres.
Obviously I will be using the bigger filter with the new tank to provide adequate filteration. I'm wondering if I can also use my older smaller filter in new tank.
I have read 2 filters are better then one which is great.

Will the smaller filter be ok in a bigger tank capacity. I don't expect it to filter the whole capacity of the new tank as the new filter will do that but would it be OK to add for extra filteration or would it break/fail due to the large then recommended water capacity.

I'm thinking it would be fine as extra filteration but that's all it would be fine for and obviously not to filter the who capacity on its own.

Hope I have explained that in a way you can understand. Thanks.

Itll be fine it will also allow your to start the upgrade with having to cycle, as long as your older tank is established.

OK cool. I was worried the smaller filter could fail due to the stress of the bigger water capacity/load.

It doesn't matter that the tank is bigger. The smaller filter will still only filter at a speed of what it is rated for (eg 100 gph). But you can definitely combine a smaller and larger filter to give the overall gph that you needed for the tank, even though typically one would prefer 2 filters that are close together in rating.

Hello mc...

More important than the filter size is your water change routine. You don't need to over filter your tank as long as you remove and replace most of the tank water every few days. The water change is the real filter, not the mechanical thing that's attached to the tank.

Yep I do a water change every 3 days along with a gravel syphon. I'm asking about the filter as the one I'm using at the moment is cycled and would be spare when I upgrade so why not use it for extra filtration and to keep the cycle in the new tank.
