Filter type for betta tank - What Should I Do?

Sorry for the bad title, any other title is too long for me.

I've been reading and I forgot betta fish don't do well with HOBs. That's a big problem because I'm going to set up a 10 gallon betta tank on a tight budget and the only cost effective option possible for the basics is the aqueon 10 gallon kit, which comes with an HOB.

I can easily order a sponge filter, but then the poor betta will have too much water flow, among other problems.

The solution I like the most would be to sell the HOB and order the sponge filter, but I want to see If any of y'all have any better options.

Sorry for the basically useless thread btw

Thank you in advance!

How will a sponge filter have too much flow? It's really not that much. You can like pinch the air line tube to reduce the amount of bubbles and how fast it's taking in water.

I was talking about an HOB and a sponge making too much flow for any betta's taste.

You can put a sponge in the output for your hob to slow flow or there's a bottle hack.

Did that and made my hob work two times harder.

I'm buying a kit because it costs less than buying everything individually, and it comes with an HOB, so should I just sell it or what?

Just keep it as a back up.

I have a big hob filter on mine and they play in it at times. You could try moving decor to help give calm areas for the betta to hang in but honestly I don't see why a hob with a diverter made from a bottle wouldn't work just fine. A real course sponge in the waterfall area I don't see that effecting the filter itself much either.

I've seen people have problems with that before, but I guess I can't judge until I try it firsthand.

I've always had HOB filters on my betta tanks and the betta's did fine. But you could always do the "water bottle baffle" (google it) if you wanted.

You can get a filter for a 1-5 gallon tank. While you might say that's too small for the 10 gallon tank, that's also one inhabitant, which is the same as if he were in a 3-5 gallon tank.

Otherwise, I do think those sponge filters or DIY sponge filters can fit the bill. Mostly you'll get are bubbles going up to the surface, no strong water flow
