10 Gallon Tank Filter Stopped Working After Power Outage

Hi everyone! I have a 5-15 gallon hanging filter on my 10 gallon aquarium. It’s a Tetra Whisper 10. I’ve only had it for about 3-4 months and it hasn’t had any problems until now. We had a mini power outage last night where the lights kicked off for about 10 seconds or so. I didn’t notice anything at the time, but today I noticed that my filter had stopped working. There is not noise, no vibration, no water movement at all. I unplugged it and cleaned it out and tried to restart it. I even primed it by pouring more water into it, but nothing. The mechanical parts were warm to the touch like it’s still working, but it isn’t. I was wondering I anyone had this same problem or had any ideas on fixing it? I had a similar issue a few months back where a filter of a different brand stopped working on the same fashion after a larger power outage. Unfortunately I broke that filter while trying to figure out what went wrong so I had to buy a new one and never got to the bottom of it. Thank you all I’m advance!

I believe so, I pulled it apart and put it back in firmly.

Have you tried hitting it?

If you had it apart and nothing was obvious, the motor might be stuck or seized. Obviously do it off tank lol But with it plugged it give the area around the motor a few love taps with something like the handle end of a screwdriver. Not beat it til broken mind you lol. Just a few good tappy taps.

That was some great advice. Thank you very much! It’s working perfectly again. I’m kicking myself for not thinking of the age old problem solver: hit it till it works.

Now to buy a new one and have this old as a back up lol.

I have a couple pond pumps that are spotty like that. They work great for emptying tanks out. Power output is lower than new, but they serve their purposes as back ups / spare parts.

That’s a great idea. It’ll never hurt to have a backup. Lower output shouldn’t matter too much, especially if they’re just being used in a pinch.
Thanks again
