Filter maintenance question...

Hello friends,

I was wondering how everyone here goes about this.

When you do a filter cleanup/maintenance, do you leave the filter on or shut it off for the time being?

I’ve done it both ways and honesty can’t remember which one makes a “poop ton”(no pun intended) of dirty water flow back into my aquarium.

I don’t use the filter cartridges that come with my marineland hob filters I use pinky floss in the media baskets and I have bags of bio balls and ceramic rings that I use as filtration. Of course I rinse everything out in old tank water before replacing it back into the filter.

What does the masses do?

Thanks for reading!

I shut my filters off when servicing them. I have a bucket on the ready nearby. So once I take out the filter media, I immediately put the media in the bucket full of de-chlorinated water (or tank water from a water change). Sometimes the water gets a little cloudy if the filter was super filthy, but it clears up in an hour or two.

I shut all my filters off during water changes and maintenance. I would think it would make quite the mess if you are trying to remove media while the filter is still pumping water.

Much appreciated! It’s probably when I don’t turn it off that it backflows all the garbage from the filter. Thank you.
