I have a 20 gal with platys, males and females. I have a concern for the born fry, since I do not beleieve in using a bredder box for pregnant females, her newborn fry can be sucked into my filter (I witnessed this happen and I feel horrible)! I don't know if a sponge filter can provide enough filtration for my tank.

Just put a fluval pre-filter sponge on the intake. That's what I do with both my Aquaclear filters. They cost about $2.

A 100% nylon stocking over the intake works too

Here is a link that may be of interest to you to a thread on the forum.

It is lengthy, but worth the read.

Toward the middle, it shows methods of using foam sponge pre-filters on your intake tube.

That will be effective for combating fry getting sucked up.
