Filter for a 37 Gallon Tank

Good Morning,

I am preparing to start up a 37 gallon tank and was looking at a variety of filter options. I have never used bio-wheel filtration, and was curious about it. Does anyone have any experience with the Marineland Penguin 200, or the Marineland Emperor 280 or 400? Which would you suggest for a 37 gallon community planted tank? This tank will be in the living room, so I am also looking for a quiet filter.

Thanks!

I really like the aquaclear 50. Quiet and works well.

For a 37 gallon the aquaclear 50 should be fine.

I agree. The maintenance is easy and media options are endless.

I just bought 3 more quiet flows (2 on my 55 & 1 on my 35) from Amazon as they are on sale .

They are certainly great for the price.

Fluval C4 is best for 37 gallon community tank.

I have two C3's, one C4, and an AC50. Rest assured, the Fluval C is best. (The following is copied and pasted from another post on here)

Fluval C4 makes Penguin and AquaClear obsolete. See my post #4 here:

and here to my post #12

The AquaClear technology is a relic from the 1980's. Hagen rendered it obsolete when it introduced the C series a few years ago. I have an aquaclear 50 that I run as an auxiallary third filter on my 38 gallon tank. I will never understand why people love them so much. If it were to "die" ..... I wouldn't even replace.it The media basket is an absolute MESS.

An aftermarket company acutally makes a properly engineered media basket that acutally works ......... the problem is, the piece of plastic costs almost as much as the filter.

[Note: The Fluval C is usually only $3-$5 more than a comparable AquaClear at Amazon & Dr. Foster & Smith]

It is much easier to do custom media in the Fluval C than the AquaClear.

Here's a link to mine ...... click on the appropriate picture for explanation:

If you want a reliable quiet filter, I would suggest a SunSun Canister filter, the HW-302 would work great for you. I have the same model on my 40 gallon breeder and it is great. I have used Marineland Emperor and Penguin filters in the past, and they are good, but a good canister like the HW-302 blows them out of the water. Much quieter, more filter capacity, filter media options, also super cheap at only around $50 including the shipping from ebay. I would check them out as it would provide plenty of filtration even if you went up to a 50 gallon in the future.

What filter did you end up choosing? I guess I am considered "old school" but I too like the aquaclear. I run a AC 30 and 50 with a not so good filter that came with the tank on a 37 gallon. You can never have too much filtration, right?
