In our 55 we use a Marineland 400 Emperor and a Marineland Magnaflow 360.
for 760 GPH in flow.

I am a canister fan, so there is bias.
How many fish do you plan to stock?
Fluval 307 is a great filter for this this size tank, if the stock a bit heavier, the 407 may be the better choice. Never can have too much filtering.

Red Tail Shark and 12-16 Tiger Barbs. I probably will just get the 407 instead of the 307 then. Would sand be okay with this filter?

I don't have sand in my tank around the intake, so other members may chime in. The intake is ~2-3 inches above the substrate, I don't really see a problem.
I myself have a sponge pre-filter on my intake, that may help with sand as well.

If you go with HOB instead of canister you might consider one near each end. My daughter-in-law had two AquaClear 70's in hers, and it worked well. Depending on your stocking levels, 50's may be larger enough.

I too have a 55 gallon tiger barb aquarium but with a 5" deep gravel substrate. I use the fluval 407. Slightly over filtered if theirs such a thing. My stock is 20 tiger barbs 15 cardinals 1 bristlenose 2 clown plecos 1 siamese algae eater.

I'm 1 that uses a hob filter with using cut to fit
2 inch thick sponge's in the filters compartment
area, they do a AWESOME Job for keeping mine
clean & clear, & I use 2 of them 1 at each end.
