Hi everyone,

Thinking of getting this 10 gallon marina LED aquarium kit tank.

Will I need a strong filter for one-two pea puffers? Maybe aqua clear 30?

Thanks!

It should be. Of course, its all about the amount of bb that your filter holds. Usually, it doesn't matter what gph it is unless there are lots of fish. The marina should be fine for 2 puffers, though I do recommend adding a little extra media as the cartridges in there aren't the best. Again, though the filter should be fine for your stocking(mine handled 13 fish with medium lowish bioload, I fed them everyday 6 days a week) you can have something bigger if you prefer something bigger.

Got it, thanks a lot. I am still very new to the hobby, could you please explain what you mean by add extra media? So keep the cartridges in there but get more/better ones in addition?

You can keep the cartridges(or still replace them), but in addtion there is an extra compartment in the filter. In there, you can add some seachem matrix media as it has plenty of space for beneficial bacteria. You could also switch out the cartridges and replace them with better media but for 2 pea puffers I don't see the need to. Good luck

Thanks!!! One last thing: do I need to buy something to prevent the puffers from getting sucked up by the filter? Pre-filter sponge?

Fun fact: Seachem Matrix is good ol' 100% pumice, but with a fancy price tag. Anything porous in your filter will do - lava rocks, bio-rings, sponge, etc.

Yes. I believe the marina filter does come with an intake sponge tho.

True, however after looking at medias under a microscope, matrix or the pumice seachem sells does have one of the best surface area. I do agree with lava rocks and bio rings but sponges aren't the best compared to the others as the surface area isn't actually really good for bacteria. Just my opinion though.

There's also some reasonable evidence to suggest that filter media isn't even necessary, but that's a further digression of the thread.
