Few questions for a tank upgrade.

HI guys,

I have recently bought a new tank (29 gallons) I am planning to put my fish from my older overstocked 10 gallon tank. Here is the list of all my fish that I'm going to put in the 29 Gallon tank:

3 Mollies
2 Neon Tetras
2 Danios
2 Guppies
1 Angelfish

So I had a couple of quick questions:

1. Should I put Tetra Safe Start in the tank this time or no. (I put it in the 10 gallon tank. Not sure if it made a difference.)

3. What temperature should I set the new tank to? (The old tank is at about 78 F.)

2. Should I get any more fish? (Ex: More Danios or Neon Tetras)

Thanks for all the help!

I'm pretty sure some may or may not agree with me but..When I upgraded my 29 to a 40b I just siphoned and reused my existing water and added apI dechlorinator to the new water and filled up the tank. I made sure the water coming out of the tap was pretty close to what is in the tank ( about 78°F). And make sure to reuse all your filter medias to maintain that beneficial bacteria and cycles it a bit quicker. I wouldnt add anymore fish in right away. Id wait a bit. And make sure to quarantine any new fish you buy for at least 3-4 weeks

1 neon dwarf gourami
2 false juliI cory
2 panda cory
2 bolivian rams
1 peacock gudgeon
1 dalmatian platy
6 harlequin rasboras( new quarantine)

Here goes. A 29 is small for an angelfish when it is full grown. I would definitely not add another. I would re-home the neons. They are school fish and need a proper school, they also will nip the angels fins. Up the danios to at least 8 as there are also school fish. A temp of 78 should be fine altho the danios like their water cooler.

If you do not plan to plant this tank you want to be sure to put in some food with veggies in it for the mollies.

As Tk82 said be sure to quarantine any new fish.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm still not sure whether to put the tetra safe start or not.

Danios and neons both aren't temperature compatible with angelfish, so I'd rehome both of them. There are many other fish that can handle the warmer temps preferred by the angelfish.

saurabh01 is your existing tank cycled? If so, I would just some of the filter media to your new tank.
I agree, you should rehome the schools

Peacefantasy my 10 gallon tank is not cycled. I'm not sure if I can keep both of the tanks.

I would add the safestart right after adding the fish. My 29 gallon fully cycled within two days.

I've never heard of it happening that quickly unless you add seeded media, but I'd still follow the directions on the back of the bottle and not do anything for two weeks.

Perhaps you would like to go into more detail for the OP? There are some incompatibilities but a larger tank would make more room for the fish.

I was thinking that Molly's and guppys breed very Easley so her fish population would increase without getting more fish

HI guys, I did upgrade my tank. It has been about 6 hours since I've transferred the fish. So far they look calm and not distressed. I bought a Marineland 29 Gallon tank and the biowheel filter is making a lot of grinding noise. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the impeller. It annoys me a lot as the tank is in the family room. I'm not sure what to do about that.

My emperor 400 does not prime itself, and will make that noise until I pour water into the back compartment. Have you poured water into the back compartment?

Aichmalotizo Yes. I have filled up the back compartment with water before starting the filter up.

Did you buy the filter today? if you did, return that filter ASAP...you don't want to start off with problems on your new tank. I've only had an HOB once, and that was years ago. I would suggest cannister if you can.
I believe a lot of members that have an HOB, recommend Aquaclear.

HI BluMan1914
My filter is not HOB, it has the intake tube in the tank and the motor and stuff outside the tank. I was able to reduce most of the noise today, but there is still an unwanted buzzing noise.

If it's the Marineland 400 that I know of, it is considered an HOB because it hangs on the back of the aquarium.

HOB - hang on back.

The biowheel is an HOB filter. I have one myself and I'll be honest...I despise it.

The best way to get the noise from the impeller to go away is to pull the intake tube up and off the impeller and reseat it a few times until the noise stops. Sometimes it sit against the impeller all shuckwad and makes noises.

You need to read up on the nitrogen cycle. All tanks have to cycle before the water becomes stable enough to safely support fish. Moving water from the 10 gal won't help. The bacteria reside mostly in the filter media not suspended in the water. Tetra Safe Start is a 'no look' way to cycle and requires you do nothing for 2 weeks. If something goes wrong and the cycle fails your first sign is fish stressed or dying. I would recommend a test kit that measures ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph. This way you can 'see' what's happening and if something goes wrong you can correct it. Until the cycle is complete you fish are at risk of ammo or nitrite poisoning.

Op doesn't have the 400, I do. I just used it as an example because it also has, biowheels, and makes a similar noise.

Op, I would recommend doing what Mike says. It's most likely air trapped down near the impeller. Try shaking it lightly as well

HI Aichmalotizo and MikeRad89
I tried doing everything. I took out the impeller, there was no damage as I recently bought the tank. I tried taking the intake in and out, but it didn't work.

I wouldnt keep messing w it. Just take it back to the store for an exchange

Aichmalotizo..sorryim. Reason why I thought Saurabh01 has an HOB is because he/she mentioned a bio-wheel.

I found that my impeller housing had a small crack near the place where the impeller spins. I called up marineland and they have shipped me a new impeller and impeller housing without asking any questions.
