How would one tell what strain your female Betta is? I want to breed with my new male (Ive bred before and am fully capable of doing so) but Ive only done it with your average Betta which I think are veil tails? So I'm wanting to get a halfmoon female but is it possible to tell or are only males classified into strains... please could someone help me out.

thanks!

Nope the females are classified too. Emma was a Halfmoon female and I am sending a picture of her. You will probably not find one in a petstore. You may get a Crowntail or a Veiltail but Halfmoon Females are almost always sold by breeders or distributors as they are tempermental and not really good family "pets" unless you are like us and REALLY love and have patience with fish.

Emma killed all the other females, one way or another and then killed 2 of my cories..they do not do really well with other fish. The female halfmoons are more tempermental than the males in my opinion.

She was pretty though...

Thanks Rose!

Emma really was so pretty! Thanks again youve been such a big help! Ill try get one maybe the pet store can order one for me cos I don't know of any breeders here, but there must be other wise where the stores getting them from? Do you think that a crowntail female would be compatable with sherlock? would that be possible - would the fry be classified as hybrids of crossbreeds or rather just a new strain??? I'm really getting into my bettas now Rose, its really so fun, and its so great to know they totally dependent on you for everything!!! its like being a real mommy!

So a half moon female, must be on her own - 10 gallon I would presume? I'm getting ahead of myself, lets just see if I can get a hold of one in the first place! hehe!!!

BTW the pet store here is importing a load of EHEIM sludge removers at my request!!!

Oh I do not know about the two types breeding and what you would end up with, I checked it out at length in my Betta books and can find no instances of any type of reference to it. But I do not know if it is because it is frowned upon or if it is impossible. The Halfmoon fry would definitely be worth more like about double to triple the value so if you can get a Halfmoon female, it would be worth the purchase price. My little ones live in Hex5 gallon tanks and do pretty well because that is literally ALL I have room for and since they are one to a tank I cannot imagine only having one. I am sure 10 gallons would be a plus though if you can swing it and have the room.

Yes, I just do not think it would be worth the chance of having other fish in with a Halfmoon female with the investment you put into fish both monetarily and emotionally. It kills me to lose fish and when they kill EACH OTHER that is even worse..I came about as close as I ever have to euthanizing a fish over the murder of my other little ones.

I am so glad you were able to get the fish store to import the EHEIM sludge removers..since they will deal in bulk you won't have much in the way of shipping costs passed on to you where otherwise it would have been the whole amount. With having an Oscar tank you really need one. I love mine so much I have two so I do not have to use the same one in my q tank as the others.

Ok, I spoke to the Store, they can get hold of a HM female for me, at a price though, although its not too bad, still under R100 that's pretty respectable. It will take a while for her to get here so that gives me time to set up her tank and cycle it before I collect her. I must also cycle the breeding tank, I don't want all the little fry to die now do I? But Ill start a new thread and post pics on the progress as soon as I get her. I don't think many of us have had the privildge of witnessing a spawn.

Thanks so much Rose youve really been such a big help!!!

I will suggest the same thing to you that I did earlier to Phloxface. Consider starting a tank Blog on the Breeding tank so the whole forum can witness and share in the experience of the spawning. I know that you are going to be super busy with the little one and all the fry and the other fish and hubby and all (I do not know how you keep up with it all), but it may be the only chance that many of us have to see it.

I am so glad that you are going to get a HM female. It will make for nicer fry and besides it would be a shame to find that the two would not breed if you got a CT. If you are paying that much are you going to get your choice of color?

To get a Blog started all you have to do is notify Mike that you want to start one and he will get one set up for you. There is a section for Personal Tank Blogs, unless you just want to keep it in the Betta Board which is okay with me but I thought you might have better luck and more room on your own blog where you could post different topics of your own.

That's a good idea, Ill wait until I get her though, then ill start everything up and notify mike, ill just post here to let everyone know to go to the fish tank blog.

Ill try to get either a red or same as Sherlock, I think the fry will then be either Red or Steel Blue and Turquoise and obviously some throw backs of sort.

Ill get everything started this side, I need to get some java moss and a new sponge filter along with a heater. this is a good time of year to breed cos you can't do it in winter here cos the room temp is too low and you can't put all the males in little jars, the temp in there will be about 18 celcius. weve got 4 more months of warm weather, so I hope they don't take too long with the female!

Thanks!

LOL I keep forgetting you all are having your summertime there. We are hip deep in snow and have had periods of no electricity about here. Some around me have not had it for a week. I have a generator that I have to have because of some emergency type equipment I have so I have had all along...lucky fishies here. But I feel so sorry for the folks who have no electricity because we are having bad weather again this evening and into tomorrow.

It must be terrible when your electricity is out, cos not only are you in the dark but you're cold too! its happened here a couple of times but that's cos the powerplants are overloaded and there are gaps in the power grid, but it goes off for 24hours max, not one week and it doesn't affect us too much its more businesses like restaurants, we had an incident here where a restaurants sea food went off and they tried to claim the money from the council, but got nowhere they lost thousands!

I e-mailed Miami Aquariums too, they said that they can import Bettas to my LFS for me too, so if later I need different strains, I can at least get hold of them. They are actually really good, they got back to me same day!!!

Just tell 'em I sent you and they will know that you have come from here. They are grateful to the forum for all the great comments they have gotten about their fish.

I know I super brag them up all the time but their fish are absolutely the healthiest I have ever had.
