I love bettas but am unable to set up a new tank,. I was reading up on bettas and apparently females can play nice with others??

Every betta is different. Ive had females that were much more nasty than any males. Although I have tried this many times, ive made sure to have a back up tank for the just incase incidents.

I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest. My females have been much more aggressive than my males and one of my females was rescued from a "community" tank and was in shreds by the time I got her. I don't feel it is worth the risk.

I have a nasty female betta that I have to seperate. However, I am able to keep my male betta with guppies. So with betta, it is unpredictable. It is heavily depend on betta temperament.
If you want a betta community tank, you need to have many tanks or a fishstore that you can trade back your betta if thing doesn't work out.

I have a male betta in my 55 gallon community tank and he does really well with almost all of the fish. He doesn't like the ballon mollies, but he just chases them away and has never hurt them. He seems to really enjoy all the swimming area, I'm not sure why they even sell the small cup sized tanks for them. He definitely apprecites being able to swim around. I had him in my other tank with my guppies and he did fine in there until I got him his leaf hammock. The guppies liked it too and he got tired of that really fast and was constanly chasing them away from it. He never nipped any of them either. As long as none of your other fish are fin nippers I think it wouldn't hurt to try it. Most pet stores will exchange the fish if you really had a problem. You might save a betta from ending up in a half gallon bowl on someones desk. I think my betta is one of my favorite fish, he has a lot of personality, for a fish.

No. It isn't just a concern about the betta's fins getting nipped. Bettas can be very aggressive little buggers.

I've had single males in the tank and they loved it. I've also had male and female together for a few weeks but they ripped each others fins a bit (when I wasn't looking). I've also had females in larger tanks and they did fine, just a little territorial. I would say its a safer bet to just not have them in a community tank. Also if you have any fin nippers in your community tank, bettas are going to look like prime-rib.
