shrimp, few pellets (depending on the size) every 2-3 days. also depends on the amount of debris and decaying plants you have in there

what kind of fish do you have?

again depends on what you feed them and how big the pellets are, i feed mine once a day as much as they can eat in 1-2 minutes.

Without going to great length quoting from Walstad's book or posts/articles on the sister forum, fish food is a source of nutrients for plants by feeding fish well (no fasting days,) and a bit extra for plants (as a source of ammonia if I understood her correctly). Obviously, one wouldn't want to feed to the point of overloading the tank's ability to balance itself out.

I have to admit, I don't claim to exactly understand what she means by feeding a bit extra for her plants: uneaten food or giving fish more than per usual recommendations. In the end, both end products are ammonia, nitrites, and finally nitrates.
