Feeding Pond Koi Cheerios?

So my grandmother had 2 Koi for about 25-30 years that she solely fed plain cheerios and they grew to be well over 2 feet long, were fairly fat, happy, and had no health issues. I currently have about 10-15 Koi in my pond (they vary from about 5-10 years old) that we have fed mostly Koi food, however they are big enough that we occasionally feed them whole cheerios too. They really seem to enjoy them, but will they be okay if we switch them over and only feed them cheerios? Is there a danger to feeding them cheerios as opposed to fish food? It would certainly be nicer to buy a box of cheerios for $3 rather than $30 for a bag of food. Thank you for any help.

You can feed them occasionally, but as a staple, it won't be very healthy for them (by that, I mean not providing enough nutrition).

Sorry to get away from the cheerios, but check this out.

That was something I was worried about, I guess if anything feeding them cheerios with the koi food will extend the life of the bag so I shouldn't have to buy it so often.

You can feed them cheerios 2-4 times a week, but just "supplement" it with koi food.

Thank you! And I've never heard of feeding them cat food, however when catching minnows, I know they love dog food!
He has quite the set up surrounding his koi so I don't think he would be feeding them anything that would not be beneficial to them. He spends some time showing the crude analysis of the cat food bag. Pause the video there and compare to the koi food you are feeding. It might be a good alternative.
This guy is koi crazy so there might be something to this.

Well they do look beautiful and healthy, so it's something I might consider next spring!

I feed my Koi/Goldfish pond a wide vraiety of foods , I have a staple pellet by hikari, but I also feed them occasionally boiled whole grain rice, whole grain pasta , boiled eggs, atleast 2-3 times a week boiled veggies(very important for them) , I also sometimes mix little bit of honey in their pasta or rice. I also give frozen Bloodworms occassionaly as well.

I wouldn't just give cheerios, it's always best to get a staple pellet and then occasionnaly give treats.

Outside of the cheerios and koi food, I've given them the occasional orange slices which they absolutely love and devour, but I have definitely wanted to vary their diet a little with some fresh foods. I noticed you mentioned boiled veggies, what veggies specifically?

Waste of perfectly good cheerios but they'd probably love it.

Thanks! I'll have to try some of those and see how they take to it simce its something new. But I'm sure they will enjoy it! Do you just throw it in the water and leave it?

boil it first , chop it up to bite size pieces for them and throw it in like you would regular food ,by the time you turn around it's going to be all gone, their going to most likely go nuts for it.
