Favorite Plants for Small Tanks

I still have a fondness for the old "Rich man's plant" the Madagascar Lace. Most of min have died and the others look scrawny after years. I should probably fertilize them. Still for ~1$ per bulb they were cheap compared to how they were priced when I was a kid.
For usefulness I like swords as they do not die and java moss because it makes fish breed.

Aponogetons need to go through a dormancy phase since they exist seasonally in the wild. Remove them, trim off the leaves, and store the bulb in damp sand for a few months is what I've heard.

Also yes, they would appreciate some fertilizer at least once per week

Anubias has been my fave varieties so far. I like the look of java fern and sword but haven’t had as much success with my java (just started adding potassium? In addition to simple green y they will improve. Sword just get too big for my 30 gal unless the focal point

Any kind of epiphyte and low light plants. I like how swords can reproduce several smaller plants off a stem, I love how my ferns will stem new plants from a single leaf...also like how crypts are also a low light plant that can add some color. Lots of plants with minimal care and light. They seem to thrive in my discus tank and give a natural look to the whole scape. There's also a dozen or so marimo moss balls in there that, like many have stated, are great!
