Super Mario World on SNES.. close 2nd would be a tie between SMB3 (NES or SNES versions) and Mario 64 on N64. Least favorite: Mario Sunshine on GameCube.

ahh.. the original! love that one too.. I love the SNES version of it and the much-harder SMB2 (Japanese version) that was just a much harder game but just like SMB1 in gameplay.

I'm currently working on New Super Mario Bros for the DS.  My DS Lite is the only console of any sort that I have anymore. I have fond memories of the Mario games for NES and SNES though!  I think I'd probably go with Super Mario World for SNES as my favorite though. Ack, I'm feelin' nostalgic!

May I also say that I adore Yoshi? I want him as a pet.

YoshI would be included since he is a main character in some Mario games, th same with Donkey Kong(who was the first boss ever for Mario).

I have Yoshi's Island DS, and I swear that no matter how difficult it gets, that cute YoshI keeps me coming back.    I've been stuck on this one level forever though, and I only have 100 on a few levels.  I'm not doing so hot. :

I usually race with YoshI in Super Mario Kart, like I said, I just adore him.  I get mad when other drivers attack or pass, how dare they do that to Yoshi!

I played Super Smash Bros at a friend's place once, it was pretty cool.  I love video games, but I'm really not that great at them.  Everybody talks about how easy New Super Mario Bros is, so I feel like a moron whenever I got stuck on something.    I enjoy watching other people play because it's fun to watch people with some skills!

I'd love to play the new SMB but i'd have to buy a DS and the Betta bug won't allow me too.

Super Mario World and Super Mario 3 are the most superior Mario games ever programmed. New Super Mario Bros. tries real hard though. WiI will see when Galaxies comes out for Wii.

I'd never had a handheld before, but I wanted a DS Lite so badly.  I didn't have an abundance of cash, but I finally just said nuts to it and bought one last July.  I figured a little splurge wouldn't hurt!  Of course...my car ended up needing a new set of tires not long after.   That's what I get for making a fun purchase!  :    I don't regret buying it though, I haven't gone a day without playing it, it's so fun.  The price really really is reasonable too.

MarioKart Double Dash all the way ;D 'course that could also be because that is the only one I have right now ;D But I love race car games they are my favorite. I play a team of Parakoupa (the red-shell guy with wings) and Princess Peach (she is less annoying than Daisy and gives you the princess shield power at times)

Nope, that's not the original.
The original Mario game was Donkey Kong. He was then given his own spinoff, called Mario Brothers. This was the last game that Nintendo developed for another platform (Atari). After that, the developed the NES.
My personal favorite is tied between SMB3 (the suits in that game rocked!) and Super Mario World.

What not like video games j/k its more than likely better for you that you don't And the movie from what I remember wasn't awesome enough on its own to make one like Mario, so I guess this time we can forgive your flaw :

Never heard about the TV show, it was either before my time or just didn't air in podunk Idaho where I grew up =)) I loved where I grew up, but it was limited in the areas of "culture" if you want to call Mario culture ;D

Technically, Jumpman was the guy in Donkey Kong. Jumpman was later used as the model for Mario in said Atari\Arcade game. It's still the first representation of the most popular Character in all Gamedom, just not technically "Mario" lol

Good choices for favs by the way.

The character in Donkey Kong became known as Mario, and the name was used in promotional materials for overseas sales.
Fun fact: Mario got his name because Mario Segale, the landlord for the building Nintendo of America's office was in at the time, barged into a meeting to demand the rent.

Did you do all this research just for the topic, or did you do it before and decide to add it here? Either way, it is very interesting.

I found the last two bits recently. I knew before, though, that Donkey Kong was the first game that Mario appeared in, because I have done research on Mario before.
And, according to Wikipedia (not foolproof, but generally accepted as a valid source of pop culture info), it is indeed true that Mario earned his name because of the landlord.

How did they come up with the name LuigI than?

Let's see what Wikipedia says:
Here we go...
Luigi's name was inspired by a pizza parlor near Nintendo of America's office. The pizza parlor was called "Mario and Luigi's." I'm thinking that the area of Redmond, Washington that Nintendo of America operated out of was a predominantly Italian neighborhood. Either that, or Mario the landlord also had a pizza parlor with his brother, Luigi.

I wonder if nintendo would sue that pizza parlor now for trademark infrigments?

LOL!!! I live about a 15 mile drive from there and I was just passing by the gates today! But yes, in that region you can go by about 7 ma and pa pizza parlors from one end of town to the other. Though now there are more mexican and chinese restraunts because they serve wider variety then pizza.

Green Pipes! (I think this is the most ludicrous thing in the game)

after stomping all those green koopas to bits, the mario brothers run the resulting puddles of goo through a factory to make drainage and sewer pipes -- that's why they turn out green. they just say they're rescuing the princess as an excuse to kill those koopas (an endangered species). :;a

Yeah, they may be endangered, but have you ever had linguinI with koopa sauce and sauteed goombas?
Followed by a 1-Up mushroom torte, it's to die for. (and with the torte, you can afford to )
