Favorite Less Common Fishes

I like my goofy Scarlet Badis's. They are so weird. Then I really like my Ember Tetras and Chili Rasboras best out of the "more popular" groups.

I like Festivums. You never see them, when they get under good light and are comfortable, they look great. Pretty cool fish.
They are among my favourites...

Not really rare, but adopting normal, gold fancy goldfish. I mean, wow, my last 2 rescues have been gold, and nowadays you almost NEVER see these guys.

I find glo bettas cool but many people seem to dislike it and find their glowing eyes weird. I like normal and glo bettas both the same.

Considering most of my favorite fish are not platies, mollies, guppies or neons, guess you could say all my favorite fish are unpopular!

I’m interested in conservation fishkeeping, and am building out tanks to keep Parosphromenus spp (aka licorice gourami). One of the growout tanks will also house Hemirhamphodon tengah (Borneo redline halfbeaks) which are a bit of an oddball.

The Laos pygmy multi-stripe loach (Yunnanilus cruciatus). They are one of the few nano loaches and I just love their behaviors.
I have many favorites I could share, but I recently took a picture of some of my dwarf zebra hovering loaches. So, I'll share that one:View attachment 837359
These little ones are active, peaceful, and almost always out in plain view.
Omg that's so funny! That's one of my rare favorite too. I didn't know they got renamed officially.

I took note of these as a fish I'd like to keep some time in the future. It seems they're not usually as red as in Mudminnow's photo, but even as black and white they look eye-catching, and really cute.

I keep a pair of Chocolate Cichlids.
I'm probably the only active member that keeps Chocolates. Very colorful, relatively docile, big Cichlid. Very good alternative to the Oscar.

i know this is not a fish, but i like ramshorn snails. They often get a bad reputation for being pest snails, but i like how they look. i have a whole bunch in my 20 high community and i dont bother killing them.

A few things, bettas are a big one. Most fish keepers always over look bettas or think they're too much of a beginner fish.

My favorite unpopular is probably ramshorns. I also REALLY like scissor tail tetras and Bleeding heart tetras IMO they're some of the coolest tetras, especially for planted tanks!

Just for fun, a super popular fish that I'm "meh" about? Cardinal Tetras....unpopular opinion, I think neons are cooler :p

I have another one: Corys. In my area, at least, they're pretty uncommon. Sure, you see them in display tanks sometimes, but no one ever actually buys them. I think Moose is pretty cool (and I can't wait to get him more friends!).

Not really “unpopular” but highly underrated: Rosy red minnows. Yep, those sick little things they sell for 10cents at petsmart. If you give them a proper tank to thrive in, they are the ideal ditherfish. Lots of activity, durable, can live in almost any parameters (within reason)
Main two downsides is they poop a whole lot and are likely to bring in disease due to the poor conditions they’re kept in. Just quarantine first

Scissor Tails are Rasboras, not Tetras. Rasboras are often mistaken for Tetras because they behave very similarly. However, they are actually related to Minnows and Danios.

My favorite unpopular fish is Rivulus marmoratus. They're so ugly the females have to fertilize their own eggs. (They really do! Self-fertilizing hermaphrodites!)

Interesting! In my area they're always sold as Scissor Tail Tetras. Either way a cool fish!

I was expecting some troll like fish....not a little Killi looking fish...:)

Jikin goldfish, I just vibe with ‘em. For some reason their shape, their aesthetic, is just so fascinating to me.
Also cuttlefish. I really would like to study them, keep them, breed them, anything I could do to learn about them up close in person. They are so intelligent and fascinating. They are also reported to even dream! They have such short lifespans, but are so smart. Dream inverts.

Emperor Tetras (Nematobrycon Palmeri)
They're maybe not rare or unpopular as such, but I feel they are overlooked and not talked about enough. Other tetras steal the whole show and this beautiful and interesting fish doesn't get the attention it deserves. A fully colored-in male is the most beautiful tetra in the world, in my opinion, and they have more personality than your average tetra. Also I can't find any in stock for my tank!

I’ve got a bunch! :D
First and foremost, I love many of the wild Betta species outside the complex. (The ones within the splendens complex have been becoming increasingly popular of late). So far I have and work with: Betta api api, Betta edithae, Betta patoti, Betta albimarginata (which *are* someone popular these days) and Betta unimaculata. I also have plans to work with Betta rubra (also more popular), Betta uberis, Betta enisae, and Betta dimidata.
I also sent my boyfriend photos of all 73+ known species the other day and told him to pick one or two he liked for me to work with XD That’ll be a surprise!

I’ve also, recently, been loving all the different gourami species! Tried to get my hands on some Parosphromeus linkei, but they were DOA. Gonna try again at some point, but absolutely love all the Parosphromeus species!
I’ve also recently acquired some paradise gourami, which used to be more popular than they are now. I hope to breed them!
Also getting a pair of “Valiant” gourami (Sphaerichthys vaillanti)(closely related to chocolate gourami, which are also cool) but display reverse sexual dimorphism because they’re maternal mouthbrooders! Really cool.
There are a TON more really cool gourami out there.

Also, this is definitely on the more popular side, but I love barbs! Just like, all the barbs lol (Except tiger barbs tbh). Rosy barbs, Odessa barbs, black Ruby barbs, snakeskin barbs, melon barbs, etc. all super fun to watch!

I think you are right that they may be rather unpopular, the LFS owner told me that people in general don't like them, no idea why. As you say they are more interactive (and greedy) than most other tetras an males have those bright blue eyes. They bite my arm when I am doing water changes and have even managed to produce a few extra ones in my big planted tank..
