Favorite Dog Breed

I already wrote one post about a favorite cat breed in the "Cats" section, so now I want to know what your favorite dog breed is (or are). Mine are absolutely Siberian Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds!

Pitbulls are my number one favorite! They are the outcasts of the doggie world, and also the most mis-understood!

When our children were small we raised Labrador Retrievers and they are the most patient and sweet tempered dog in this world. I don't have room for a large dog right now so I don't have one but would love to have another.

RudeeRu, I agree with you. Pitbulls are indeed very misunderstood. My friend has one and the dog is incredible gentle and affectionate.

Carol, it's the same with me now. I don't have the space (and the time) for the dog that I want. A siberian husky or a german shepherd, or even a golden retriever - are all very large dogs that need a lot of space to run free and a lot of movement. Although we do have a house that isn't small and we do have a backyard ... it's still not exactly good for a dog like this in NYC. It's a city, not some country side. Dogs like this need a place to live away from the city and they cannot be kept closed at home all day long - no matter how large the house. This is the reason I won't buy a dog for as long as I live in the city. If I lived away from the city, I'd definitely get a dog! Anyway, I don't want to live in NYC all my life, so once I move out, I am getting a dog Just a matter of time, because I cannot imagine not having a dog at some point. I have to!

We don't live in a big city but the dog would have to be inside when we were not at home. That's just not the life for a Lab.
My husband wants a small dog because we could keep it in the house with no problem, then he hesitates to get one. A friend has some mixed breed long -haired chichuchua/Min Poodle puppies he wants to give away so I may surprise him in a couple of weeks. The Mom was a rescue and all ready pregnant when he got her.

I like the German Shepherds because of their loyalty and reliablity. We had a few when I was a kid and I really enjoyed them.

Sorry, guys, I haven't been on forever!!! I love all dogs, but my list of absolute favorites are: Pug, Dachshund, Labrador Retriever, Pekingese, Beagle, Bassett Hound, Miniature Australian Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, and I LOVE Pembroke Welsh Corgis. If I had to pick 3 of my favorite out of them, it would be Pug, Dachshund, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. ;D

Yeah I love all animals but don't know much about the pit bulls. they are a little more aggressive like my Tiger barbs but I will have to admit those dobberman's get my respect. They are so sleek and visually a little intiimidating. This may sound funny but my experience with dogs are the little ones are the ones to watch out for. The poodles and toy dogs. The one's that you can't see their eyes because they are so shaggy. I was bit a few times as a kid but only by these smaller dogs. I learned that when I rode my bike it would excite some dogs to attack my feet because they were moving on the pedals. That's usually where they bit me. I learned that if a dog would chase me I would stop and get off the bike and just stand quietly and they would leave or their owner would come get them. No need to do anything mean to them. I think it's some kind of instinct. I have noticed also that 2 cats won't usually attack if one walks away slowly. However if one runs this makes the other one turn aggressive and give chase as to say "this is my territorry leave at once"

Pit Bull (AmStaff), Doberman, German Shepherd, Collie. In that order. Pits are definitely misunderstood and wrongly judged, as any reported dog bite is usually blamed on a "pit bull type dog"...... I'm sorry, but look up the dog bite sites. Mainly small dogs or "great family dog" types seem to bite more.

Yes. Otto, the one with the cropped ears, we just had for a short while. He was my brother in law's dog but he couldn't keep him because his wife was abusing Otto, so we took him in. He passed away last Summer.

What do you mean "she abused him"? Like, beat him up or something of the sort? I'm sorry to hear that ... I wonder why would she do that to such a beautiful and loving dog? Anyway, thanks God you took him in. How old was he when he died?

P.S. You're so lucky to have so many beautiful dogs

Just have two. They can seem like a whole herd though. She would lock Otto in the basement all day, then scream at him when he peed or pooped down there. She'd put him into a "down stay" by the back door for a long time, then yell at him for being in the way when someone wanted to use the door. She refused to let him use a water dish, making him drink out of the toilet. The list goes on. She's a truly horrible person - doesn't treat her children by my brother in law much better but spoils her children from a previous marriage to the point of it being detrimental to them. Her oldest moved in with her boyfriend when she was 16, the middle one is now 16 and pregnant, the 14 year old is headed the same way, they've all been arrested a number of times, etc. Not a good situation at all for my brother in law but he feels trapped and doesn't think he can leave her.

I am so sorry to hear all of this So it was your good heart that saved the poor dog. Thank you for that. I am also very sorry for all of the children of your brother. She really is not a very good woman. I hope everything turns out well (eventually) for the children - they deserve a good life. People such as this woman will not get very far in their lives. It is really herself that she is hurting in the end. Probably will be too late before she realizes the mistakes she is making. Once again, I wish all the best for the children.

hI Boxermom, thank you for sharing your photos...so adorable, all of them!

I feel bad for your family. Similar problems in mine as well. All I can do is pray for them. Only person I can change is me. Sometimes that is easier to accept than at other times...

Don't know how you manage to have grass in your yard! We had a boxer once (only one) and had no grass! She ran around like a freight train all the time! So funny!

LOL, I didn't know boxers can ruin your lawn!

Boxers have a particular spastic type of run that they like to do, especially after peeing. Yeah, they can tear up a lawn pretty good, but that's nothing compared to taking a boxer full in the chest at a dead run, which they also love to do. Jetta loves to do a sit-spin, where she runs at full speed with her front legs while her butt stays in place. Its hysterical to watch. The very best thing about boxers, though, is the woowoo and kidney bean dance. I don't think any other dog does it.

LOL I remember seeing the "sit-spin" a lot on Animal Planet's Funniest Animals! (one of my favorite shows)

I love pitbulls. I don't think I will get one for a long time because they are a hassle. Nearly every insurance company charges you more for owning one, and if anyone gets hurt by a pitbull in your neighborhood there will be a witch hunt. :'(

There's a lady near where I live who jogs with her boxer now and then. It's a female and rather nice looking.

However my favourite dog ever was my dog Speck, who was part black lab and part border collie. She was very smart, very loyal and brave. When we would pick blueberries in the early fall she would stand watch in case of bears (she and our other dog, Bongo, once chased a bear away from our cottage). The retriever side of her was so keen she would try to 'retrieve' stones we were skipping on the lake. The border collie side I think was where her sometimes restless intelligence came from; it didn't do to let her get bored.
