Fancy goldfish size

These are my 2 fancy goldfish in my 30 gallon tank. The black moor is already 4-5 inches and the orange telescope is 2-3. I’m just wondering if anyone knows how big they’ll get in that tank?

Nice looking fish, love the black moor! When you ask how big will they get in that tank, what do you mean? Fancy goldfish can reach 5-7 maybe 8 inches. 30 may be a bit small for them to reach their max size. Even tho they might 'fit' the tank better stunted, they will suffer from that and could have problems. I apologize if I come across rude, that is not my intention.

Thanks for the reply, I love my back moor! I'm hoping the little orange guy will eventually grow to be as beautiful as his big bro. Also no worries about sounding rude, I personally go by the rule of 20 gallons for the first fancy goldfish and 10 gallons for each additional fish. I wouldn’t be surprised if my black moor will be a bit stunted because before I got him he was not being housed in very good conditions, but I’m hoping my little orange one will reach full potential- I had the black moor in a 20 gallon by himself but I just recently bought the 30 gallon to accommodate a second goldfish since I love my black moor so much, and I turned the 20 gallon into a planted tropical aquarium.

Yes a lot of people go with that rule and it is a good basic rule for fancy goldfish! I just worry that if these guys grow towards the larger size, leaning towards the 8 inch size, 30 gallon may be a bit crammed. But that is for future thought as 30 gallon fits them well now. I imagine they could grow 6 inches in that tank. I would love to have a huge, and I mean huge, fancy goldfish tank with 6-8 goldfish. What a dream that would be!

My black moor also has a deformed fin under his tail.. I’m not sure what that specific fin is called but it’s the two on the underbelly right before his tail starts- one of those fins is considerable smaller than the other one, it’s bony rather than flowy, and it sticks straight upwards rather than pointing downwards and loose like the matching fin on the other side. I’m not sure if this is a birth defect or a result of the bad conditions he was rescued from. It’s not super important to the original thread but I wanted to mention it

I agree! One day they will move to approximately a 200 gallon aquarium with lots of other fancies! I love goldfish, they are my favorite tank

Can you attach a photo of this? Has he always had this and how long has he been in your care?

I will attach a photo tomorrow, it’s pretty late right now. Yes he’s always had this, though it’s never affected him at all, and it’s hardly noticeable. I saved him from a Walmart tank that had around 30 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank about 6 months ago so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was hurt there.. when I got him he was around 2 inches big and was infected with a fungus, so I treated him for that and he was clear within a couple weeks. He’s now a very large, healthy fish so I’m not concerned about him at all. And thank goodness Walmart has stopped selling fish!!

I'd say your probably going to see them hit around 6 inches when fully grown, most fancies reach that size unless they have had good genetics (and diet/conditions) to groom them to larger size.

Your 30 gallon makes a good tank to grow them out, and probably when fully grown appreciate a 40 gallon or a 75g.

Thanks, they will eventually be moved to a very large tank but for now this is a good size

I couldn’t get the other pic to load but that’s the fin that’s deformed

That is called the "anal fin"

I have two fancies in a 75 gallon aquarium and they are about a year and a half, maybe 2 years old now? So far they are about 4 and 5" each. They started off SO small! I got them as tiny babies...started in a 30 and then got the 75 on a fluke.

I tell you what, having them in a 4 ft long tank is amazing, I love seeing them swimming all that space! I don't know how much bigger they're going to get, I don't think they have the best genetics. I'm hoping to get maybe one or two more eventually!

Your goldies are absolutely beautiful!!! It’s awesome that they’re in such a big tank! I’d have a thousand gallon tank if I had the room

I KNOW! I had an amazing dream where I bought this quirky old house that had a gigantic cylindrical tank built into it with the house built around it (almost like a public aquarium style display). You needed to use diving equipment to get in and clean it, and I was so excited for my fish ... and they were so happy to see me and swim around with me, haha! I think Sunny, the Calico fantail, would follow me around the house if she could
