Bump!

Gathering in FOUR DAYS! (On the 18th!)

We will have spare tanks setup for anyone that brings fish to sale/swap/show off. Your fish won't have to sit in a bag all day, if you would rather let them have a temporary tank in which to relax. (Our water ranges from 7.4-7.6 pH and we keep the fishhouse air temperature to a point that the tank temps will range from 75-80ish farenheit.

Am trying to make sure that I've got all the requested dishes on the menu, but incase I missed anything please yell at me now, so that I may add it to the shopping list! (This is not the full menu. I have a couple of family members going to add a dish or two and show up to the shindig, so there will be more than this, and I haven't finished the side-dish menu just yet. )

ENTREES:

-Meatball dish (Dino's aunt's recipe that I still have to steal from her. )
-Deluxe ham balls
-Sweet and spicy chicken

SIDES/FINGER FOODS:
-Sweet-hot sausage balls (served last year and redoing by request. )
-Jalapeno peppers w/ cream cheese and bacon (served last year and redoing by request.)
-Taco tater skins
-MaccaronI salad (family member is making)
-Salmon dip with crackers or baked bagel chips or something (sorry fishes )
-Mashed potatoes (ya'll are in the south, afterall)
(probably will have more sides, but just haven't decided yet)

DESSERTS:
-Fruitcake cookies
-lemon snowballs
-fruit filled spritz cookies
-Dino's aunt may be making a cake (she does some interesting cakes )

There will probably be other dishes there, but that is a basic overview of what it is looking like now. Again, if you have any requests, food allergies, etc just holler.

No food allergies here!

The gas prices here are wonderful (I am in shock!!) I filled up my jeep the other day for 30$ there is a new gas station in town and the prices fell! So our drive down is going to be a cheap one. Of coarse we live just an hour north of Knoxville.

I'm looking forward to a road trip away from home and meeting some fish people!!

I wish you could come Kate. As well as angelfish220 and Alessa.

It's always nice to meet the people on here. Hope to see you at the next one!

Looking forward to coming up. I am more than likely going to bring some driftwood and plants. Do you think you could hold it for me? Its got a nice Anubias nana and Bolbitis heudeloti(spelling?).

I don't have anywhere to put it right now and I don't want to sell it, along with the other plants and junk.

Being a parent I can kind of understand but you could do like some of the other young people have done... Bring the parents along

Anna did, she should have them up in a day or so once she gets home.
We had about 30 folks show up and everyone seems to have a great time.

Well I made it to the hotel 8 miles down the road. I am so glad we made the 10 hour over night trip to come and see everyone.

I loved the tanks and the fishies, LevI has not noticed the extra bettas yet!! (hopefully we will be far enough way from you that we cannot turn around to return them).

Thankyou for the wonderful food and wonderful company and time.

I LOVED the gathering! It was so great seeing everyone.

It was awesome to see Angela, Cory, and Patrea (Fishfolk) again, and SOOO COOL to meet Annadvn and her husband.

I see new friendships in the making, and older ones becoming more solidified. I wish everyone safe trips home, and know that all but 2 families should be home by now.

So... funny story about the cooking:

I was a complete nit-wit and forgot to wear gloves when deseeding the jalapeno peppers.

The Poison Control Center website says you must wait out the burning. (Luckily I did most of the cooking a day ahead of time.) I tried other websites that said: Gojo, Dawn dish detergent, milk, butter, mayo, rubbing alcohol, 409 cleaning spray, Maalox, gasoline, etc... none worked (didn't try the gasoline.) 13 and a half hours of severe burning (felt like holding hands about an inch from an open flame the entire time) before it started to subside at all, and around 15 hours before they were fairly recovered... Then this morning I cut my hand while slicing fruit for the party. This was a great weekend for meeting people, but my hands just got the raw end of the deal. (I finished deseeding and making the jalapeno dish this morning with latex gloves and deseeded with a spoon!)

Heads up to anyone working with hot peppers; WEAR GLOVES! (The Poison Control Center was right, in my case... had to wait it out.)

Again, had a great time, but am ready to go relax for a while!

It was great having you and Levi, Anna!

Just tuck the Betta Falx bag into the pocket of your jacket and he'll never know it!

CWCSince jalepeno "burn" is capsaicin and the vector is oil you would need something that would first bind the oil then denature the protein-like structures that its bound to. The best combination I have found is a liquid detergent (if your serious about it, clothing detergent) and let it sit for a while. Once all the oils are locked on you could add something that was a strong acid (lemon juice or vinegar) in hot water, as hot as you can stand. This will free up the remaining molecules for a good healthy soak in the detergent again. This should kill the burning but leave your skin fragged. I would have some kind of healing lotion handy and definitely never touch your eyes or your neither regions if you handle hot peppers again.

(I once got a healthy blob of tobasco in my eye, it was a horrible experience. I feel you.)

Hope it helps some, I am a cook too and we have to look out for each other.

Dino
I will have to make it down for a meeting, maybe next time. This is my first weekend in a while I haven't traveled so I was taking time off. When is the next gathering?

CWC: Thanks...
About the burns, you should have heard the story Steve told me about the little old lady he picked up and had to take to the Erlanger Burn Center from canning peppers w/o gloves, her skin was peeled off her hands. Watch out for those peppers!!

Once again it was so nice to meet everyone!
I am going to go to bed so I can get up and work in the morning (I really don't wanna, insert hissy fit!!)

What we did not tell anyone was that we planned to give away prizes this time.

Becky Cekis of Atlanta won 50$ in credit with us.
She used 15$ of it to get tiger platies and plans on using the rest once she gets more tanks up.

Annadvn's husband, Levi, won a Aquaclear 20, which did not get here in time for us to give to them personally, but we are shipping it out to them this week.

Anna, has LevI noticed the new bettas yet?

Annadvn
  • #120
Yes, he noticed as we were leaving the hotel, he checked all the fish in the buckets. I tried to play innocent but he knows me too well.

They are currently in a 10g. After doing some research on them i'm thinking of making a black water heavily planted set up for them?

And after seeing Ross's planted tank thinking about a layer of peat with sand on top, with loads of driftwood and maybe some oak leaves as we have loads of them in the garden? With lots of plants for them to hide in.

Any suggestions?

Anna
