Fall get together at the Fish house

Haven't checked the calendar, but I can't think of anything more awesome than a Fishhouse gathering. It is long haul for us, but, we will be there. This time we are leaving home earlier so we arrive when the food is HOT! Ross is an amazing cook. And I will give you an extra $10k if I don't have to take a guppy. My luck it will drop on the way home and I have a really tough time feeding "my" babies to anything... (heehee).

Before we travel to the Fishhouse, we have to get our shots updated. We are crossing borders (hahaha) and we need to see if the vaccine for MTS is available. I know, we already have severe cases, and remission is highly unlikely, but if the vaccine is ready, there may be hope to keep us stable (guffaw).

Seriously - can't wait! Thanks guys. BTW, any hotels in town?

There are several decent hotels at Exit 49 off of I 75, about 12 miles from the fishhouse

Hey maybe you could try some grilled platys for the menu?

Thanks for the idea, Hatchet, but I am doing a chicken, beef, and pork recipe for entrees. But if you think I should do a fish perhaps Hatchetfish would be better, they are more shaped like a chip and could be crispy chips for a salmon dip.

Well got word today, doesn't look like I'll be able to come once again! Ugh, drill is on that weekend. Hope to see you at the CAAS auction though before on the 4th. I'll double check to make sure though.

Matt, we will be at the auction.

The Spring Fling will be either the weekend of, before or after April 23.

Bump...

Normally I would leave the recipes to be a surprise, and I have yet to finish the menu, but so far I've got:

-Sweet 'n' spicy chicken (Inspired by an oriental chicken recipe.)
-(there will be a pork dish)
-(there will be a beef dish)

-Salad (an obvious at any gathering of people that may or may not like meat)
-Mashed potatoes (y'all are in the south afterall )
-Possibly a salmon dip and crackers or toasted bagel chips or something
-probably some veggie side-dishes, but am unsure yet

-Fruit spritz cookies (a crumbly cookie that looks like 2 cookies with fruit preserves in middle)
-A lemon crunch bite (powdered sugar coated lemon flavored bites... Looks almost like "donut-holes')
-A fruit-cake ball (Essentially dried fruits and nuts with heated marshmallow puff stirred in to hold it all together.)

So far that is all I have on the menu, and I believe those items should not change, so I felt alright posting them. I will try to complete the menu and get it posted before the gathering.)

Last time the cream-cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon went well, so I may repeat that recipe. I try not to repeat recipes to both test myself with a broad spectrum of dishes to try as well as to not serve the same thing to someone at two different gatherings, but any smart cook knows that when something works one should always remember that.

More in the coming days...

The pork dish is deluxe ham balls.
They are also inspired by an oriental recipe.

Well, maybe no guppies, but I can guarentee shrimp.
You just have to put them on the skewers yourself while they are loose in the tank.

Amano's or Red cherrys?

Lol when are you going to turn Dino's fishhouse into an international chain? I have more than my fair share on amazing LFS around me but I could use one on my doorstep!

Well, I officially have that day off of work, I am trading days w/ someone. Steve whined a little (its the first day of muzzleloader season this year in KY) but since he is going to Fort Campbell the following weekend for a hunt he didn't mind giving me one Saturday. (Of coarse the only other day I will take from him is Sept 15th, our aniversary)

Glad ya'll can make it.

Now, for everyone planning on coming, please, if you or anyone you are bringing has food or other allergies we should know about let us know.

Food allergies, allergies to common products around the house, fur, etc.

I don't mind making accomodations with meal plan or warning signs for those allergic.
(For instance, my mom is allergic to strawberry, and a very close friend is allergic to tomato.)

Actually one game Dino and I had planned, seriously, is "Help us move the 220g tank so that we may put more cinder blocks underneath it to raise it closer to eye-level."

Anyone who wants to play will be in the drawing for a dozen malaysian trumpet snails or a pound of duckweed, whichever they choose. lol

Sounds delish!
I loved the peppers - and have served them twice since tasting them at your place. Always a winner!

Looks like for $185 non-refundable or $206 refundable fare that Greyhound would bring you and take you back.

You should plan to come to one of the ones in the next few years!

I was wondering if anyone that will be at the gathering would want for free 2 common plecos, one is at least 6 inches long and the other 4. They are putting out more waste in my cichild tanks than they are helping clean up, so I decided that I would get rid of them and since I would be seeing fellow fish lovers, I could give them to someone who would take good care of them.
I am going to stick with my bushynose plecos, they are wonderful algae eaters, the other guys got lazy on me.

Would you be so kind as to tell me exactly where this event is taking place so that I may also inquire about the price of bus tickets?

Its really not looking good for us to make it to this one *sob* but don't you also hold one again in the spring? If we start making plans now we can definitely make that one.

The weekend before, of, or after April 23rd is the Spring gathering, yes. (April 23rd is when Santa Claus gets a year older. )

I will PM you the address so that you may look into it. We will try to get that April date pinned down to a precise day as soon as possible, for you folks planning to make the next one.

HI CWC,

Me and the hubby would love to attend.

If anyone would like to car pool we will be driving from the St. Louis area on friday nightish (10 hour drive) finding a hotel to rest and freshen up at before going to the BBQ before driving home on sunday.

PM if if you would like to car pool we have space for 3 additional people (will be snug - we have VW Jetta does 45mpg) with minimal baggage.

Awesome, Anna!

We can't wait to meet new people, and this is definitely the most new faces at a cookout yet! (This is the third cookout we've done, I believe.)

Very appreciative to offer a car pool to others in your area. That is by far one of the best signs that the true meaning of the hobby and the spirit it entails is alive and well out there.

Do we need to bring any food??

Chief_waterchanger
  • #75
Nope.

This is a gathering for everyone to sit back and enjoy and socialize. Now if you want to bring something you are definitely more than welcome, just know that it is not required, nor expected of any attendees to bring anything other than themselves.

Just so everyone planning to attend knows, Dino and I are going to have a FREE raffle for all attendees to participate in (13 years of age and older for participation, please). The winner will receive $50 credit for any of the fish/plants/etc that is sold at the fishhouse. There will be no expiration on the prize credit, and it may be redeemed at any time.

I have yet to make the final touches to the menu for the cookout, but I am still perusing my cookbooks to see what looks good as well as being something slightly different, but still commonly enjoyable.

If enough people show interest we will do a trip to the Chattanooga Aquarium the day after the cookout. (Each person would be responsible for their own admission, and we could carpool down.)

Please remember, if anyone planning to attend has any allergies that we should know about ahead of time you may PM Dino or I and we will do our best to accomidate.

Thanks, I might try to bring a desert of some kind (I might cheat a little, my mom has a resturant and I might make her make something). We def can't go to the Chat Aquarium the next day, Steve would kill me. Its the 2nd day of hunting in Ky. With the price of groceries right now, some deer meat in the freezer is not a bad idea.

I wish I could take you up on that offer, since we will be on 4 hours or so from you by that day...but it is only a couple of days after we will move up to Kansas City area. I don't think my hubby would like me taking off right then

Ahh, i'm sure he wouldn't mind you having a therapeutic day with friends talking fish! Moving is very stressful!

I guess by then you won't have your fish (except Neptune) so you will need to see Dino and CWC's fish ready for when you restock!

Come join us, will be nice to have someone else in the car besides the hubby.

Wish I could. If it was just hubby and me I would...but since we have three boys two of which we need to get enrolled in school, I don't think I would be able to. Not to mention Wes will be starting his recruiting duty pretty soon after we get there. Maybe next year...
