Extra seeded canister

Hi, looking for expert advice.

I have a 75g fish tank which had the canister running in it for 2 years. The inlet/outlet valves at the top of the canister have now seized and won't detach, so I exchanged some of my extra seeded hobs for the canister.

Now I have a fully seeded canister with sponges, matrix and noodles still with the fish tank water (changed on 18 April) not connected to any tank. How long will these last in the canister without changing the water and will they still remain seeded? (Seems a waste but I don't have room for any more tanks)

Several days to a few weeks. Depends on the amount of waste still in them and how cold it is.
I would really encourage you to at least pop the top on the canister as it will build up gas and become an anaerobic environment without any water movement. In other words things will rot and stink.

Thanks, will take the top off today for a couple of hours.

So it has been about 2 weeks now and it is not cold at all. I'm in the Whitsundays, which is the tropics and has been in high 20's to low 30's.

So I just throw everything out now?

 

Just put all the media in media bags and place them in the tank.

That would be great - even now after they've been in the closed canister for two weeks? I took the lid off and there is no smell - would be such a waste to just throw everything away
