Hello,

Firstly, I would like to make it clear that this is not to offend anyone, and just a topic of discussion. After a lot of research, I have figured that my Dwarf Gourami has Iridovirus, which I am sure many of you know, has a mortality rate of as high as 80%. My dg is sick since last 4 days. It dosent even have enough power to go upto to breathe, and hasnt gone up since last 3 day, almost no movement at all. I just netted it to the surface of water to give it access to oxygen. Its clearly visible that it is in extreme pain, and she is really trying hard to live. Most chances are tho, its gonna die. Currently, it is suffering a lot, Its gills are moving rapidly for oxygen, it dosent have power to swim, and it hasnt eaten from 5 days. Note that all water parameters and other fishes are fine, hence I'm 100% sure it has iridovirus.

I am thinking of euthanizing it. Ik that its probably going to die, and I don't want it to die extremly painful death. What do you guys think about it? Is it best to kill it I'm a way it dosent have tI suffer, because currently, she is suffering every single second it is alive...

If so, what are the best way to euthanizing it?

Again, I don't want to offend anyone’s beliefs or opinions here, I just want to do the best for my gourami.

If you feel she is suffering, I think euthanasia is best. I had to do it a few weeks ago for the first time, with clove oil. I was very nervous, but it was actually quite peaceful.

Ahh sorry to hear you had to that too...Would the one with anesthetic be more peaceful tho, since your fish is actually not conscious?

I followed the formula that was in this thread. The first dose kind of puts them to sleep, the next dose then kind of finishes the process. It was very peaceful and my little tetra gently drifted to the bottom. I’m sorry I can’t come up with a better description.

I will wait another day, never kniw if my gourami might just make it thru, if not, I might have to make the harder choice

Good luck. Whatever you decide, you are kind to consider her quality of life.

Sorry for your sick fish, but euthanizing fish is humane in certain circumstances. You have to make that call like many of us have had to. Clove oil works fast and humanly.

In my many years of the hobby I've had to euthanize more fish than I would've liked. If you don't have clove oil you can easily and peacefully euthanize fish by just using ice. If you find two bowls, one small enough to fit into the larger one, put the fish in the smaller one with some aquarium water. After that put ice and salty water around the smaller bowl, inside the larger, and just let it sit. I find it much easier to put a book over the small bowl so I don't see the poor thing. The water eventually drops in temperature and because fish are cold blooded, they will quickly fall unconscious. As the water cools further, brain activity slows and they peacefully pass. Clove oil is a better option in my opinion but I've never had it just lying around the house. I'd say wait though, euthanasia is always a last resort and there's still a 20% chance your little buddy will pull through.

Thanks everyone for replying so quickly!

My Gourami passed away this morning, after going through extreme pain and suffering since last 5 days, not to mention without eating for 5 days!!

Although, it did die peacefully inside its favorite ornament where it used to play most of the time when she was well.

Rest In Peace

Again, Thanks Everyone!

Sorry for your loss. I'm going thru the same thing. My female angel has a lower jaw injury that got infected. She hasn't eaten in 9 days. The infection is clearing, but I think I may have to euthanize.

Hey, I thibk you should wait if its recovering. Also, I would say move her to a place where she can have access to surface, so she can breathe oxygen as well as she might have easier time eating.
Good Luck With your Angelfish

Best Regards

Thanks. Yea she's in my 29 gallon QT all by herself. She has 1 more day of meds. Then a large water change, and I'll see. I haven't given up yet.

I hate dealing with sick fish and the process of euthanasia. Some people don’t have an issue with conducting it, but I feel horrible. In fact I think of it as life. I even give it a quick thought along those lines, when I see a tree being cut down. It’s just me

OMG MY GOURAMI IS ALIVE!!!!!! When I checked in the morning it was lying horozontally on the gravel, bo movement, no gill movement and / or eye movement!!!!!!! I SHAKED THE TANK IT STILL DIDNT MOVEE AND TOUCHED IT WITH A NET TO SEE IF ITS REALLY DEAD, IT STILL FIDNT MOVE AT ALL, NO REACTION!!! I thought I would remove it after I get back from grocery shoppinng. When I came back it changed position, now it was inside a cave, his gills are moving, although he is lying at a 45* angle....I still can’t believe it’s alive!, its like kt was dead and now its suddenly back to life....

Me too, I have never actually eithanized a fish yet. Its almost like a murder to me tbh, but I guess sometimes you gotta make a hard choice for greater good
