I have decided to breed my wild caught guppy with my fancy guppy, and see the outcome. but first I need to check if I have enough cover for a high survival rate.
so is this enough cover?

Hi,

You probably won't get any babies with a betta in the tank. But yes, that is enough cover. If you wanted to maximize survival rate put in some floating plants with long roots (like Water Lettuce, Water Hyacinth, or Frogbit). Also you'll get more fry if the pregnant female is the only fish in the tank, other than algae eaters like plecos or otos. If I remember correctly, females have a hormone in their system during and after birth which makes them not eat their fry for a few hours after birth. Other fish however will eat the fry as soon as they are born.

+1 for that reply....covered most of the bases and I agree with it 100%.

Don't underestimate the ability of fry to hide! The betta and female guppy might eat some but most will likely make it.

I have jack dempsey fry in an oscar tank that have yet to be eaten. They have been in there for about 3 weeks and eat off bottom. Unfortunately their mother jumped out of the tank so ther all alone I got most in a breeder net but some are still in the tank

Okay, thanks for the help guys! Unfortunately those plants you suggested are illegal in my state, also I will remove the Betta in a bit also, the female guppy. I have a 14 gallon cycled tank with just 3 guppies and platies so I will place them in that tank

All those plants are illegal? Wow, sorry. I have water lettuce in my tank and I really like the look. It keeps too many of my baby fish alive though haha. You could also try Najas, Wisteria, Anacharis, Cabomba, Myrio Green, and Java Moss as floating plants. Riccia fluitans forms clumps that may save fry, I've never used it though.
