Emperor 400 Vs. Tidal 110

I've narrowed it down to these two filters and will also have a canister filter.

Emperor is rated at 400 gph and Tidal at 450.

I've had good success with Marinelad Bio wheel filters in the past. Some may think they are gimmicky, but the concept makes sense to me. That said, the Tidal line has some pretty nice features. The one I'm most drawn to is the surface skimmer option. Only drawback there is it may suck in food.

Any opinions? Application would be on a 65 gal. tank and again, with a Canister filter as well. Primary function would be mechanical and some biological filtration with easy cleaning (HOB vs. canister). Thanks!

Id personally go with Marineland between those two. After some major research and input from a friend, the Tidal is a great concept but has some shortcomings, including filter bypass. If you want I can post a full review which covers all of it.

Have you considered AquaClear at all?

I can only say that I love the Emperor 400! I run one in all my tanks along with a Penguin too. The 400 comes with 2 gray cartridges that you can put whatever you want in. I use biomax balls in each one. Gives me that extra over just the bio wheels which have been know to not turn! The 400 has these stems that shoot water to the wheels to turn them and they can get clogged and sometimes have been known to shoot me in the face with filter water after cleaning Overall though I love the marineland products!

never had a tidal. But I have 2 emperors.
they're a huge hob. And comes with two media container things. And id say imo good flow. only thing I don't like is that the filter pads get dirty really fast.

IMO the Tidal is the better filter, as for the bypass thing ? that is so overblown it's ridiculous and, if it bothers someone it's easy fixing with a bit of floss. If you want surface skimming the Tidal is a no brainer.
