Tank
What is the water volume of the tank? - 55 gallon
How long has the tank been running? - between 3-4 months
Does it have a filter? - 2 aquatech hang ons
Does it have a heater? - yes
What is the water temperature? usually around 72. Now it's around 75.
What is the entire stocking of this tank? (Please list all fish and inverts.) As of right this moment: common pleco, 3 corys, 2 tetra, 2 killifish, 2 platys, 1 molly, 4 cosmic blue danios, 1 neon blue dwarf gourami, 1 american flagfish, 1 double red agassizi dwarf cichlid, 4 rosy red minnows. In a separate tank due to medication, 5 huge ghost shrimp and 3 african dwarf frogs.

Maintenance
How often do you change the water? once a week
How much of the water do you change? 25%
What do you use to treat your water? stress coat, water clarifier
Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water? substrate

*Parameters - Very Important
Did you cycle your tank before adding fish? yes
What do you use to test the water? api master test kit
What are your parameters? We need to know the exact numbers, not just “fine” or “safe”. NOT OKAY!
Ammonia: between 0 and 0.25
Nitrite: 2.0
Nitrate: 20
pH: 7.4

Feeding
How often do you feed your fish? once a day
How much do you feed your fish? one day a frozen cube of brine shrimp or redworms, the next day flakes and sinking pellets and algae wafer

Illness & Symptoms
How long have you had this fish? some 2 months, some 2 weeks
How long ago did you first notice these symptoms? about 2 weeks ago
In a few words, can you explain the symptoms? white spots on tails and bodies, finding 1-2 dead fish per day for a week
Have you started any treatment for the illness? yes. First, I removed the shrimp and frogs. Then added some aquarium salt. I leave the heater on all day, trying to increase the temp as much as the minnows can take it. It's currently at 75 and they're not loving it. Then used Coppersafe (5ml per 4 gallons).
Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase? not that I noticed
How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all? flashing - rubbing against the rocks and decorations

Explain your emergency situation in detail. (Please give a clear explanation of what is going on, include details from the beginning of the illness leading up to now) --

It started about 2 weeks ago when I noticed that the minnows were flashing. I'm brand new to the fish world, and I thought it was funny looking until I looked up why they were doing it. Then I saw that a couple of my tiger barbs had some white spots on them. My husband shrugged it off and said it was nothing and I was worrying too much. So I let it go. A couple days go by, more fish have spots and a tiger barb is dead. Now he's listening to me and believes when I say something is wrong. I look into it and realize it's more than likely ich since more of the fish are covered in spots. So I put in some aquarium salt, go to Petco for Ich-x but they don't have it. Just some crappy herbal solution and they had one bottle of Fritz Coppersafe left, so I buy the Coppersafe. Get home and remove the shrimp/frogs and dose as directed. That was approximately 4 days ago. Now I'm just sitting here while I have a freezer bag filled with dead fish: 7 tiger barbs, a pleco, and my favorite little guppy in the world. and everything in the tank except for the pleco, corys and minnows have white spots.

Now I will say that the remaining guys DO look slightly better. the 2 tetras were HORRIBLE looking and now the spots are going away and mainly on their tail fins. The 2 of the danios still have lots, and the gourami is just getting spots now. pics attached.

I'm confused on my next steps. Should I take out rocks, gravel, plants, basically should I take out everything that I can except for the fish and either toss it or boil it until this is gone? how often should I change water now? I'm really really really frustrated and ready to just dump the tank out in the yard. I don't know what I'm doing and it's showing. I sat infront of the tank last night and bawled, because I've put so much time and MONEY into this tank and it was for nothing because it's gone to **** in a handbasket. Someone please help me. what do i do?!?

and if I decide to keep the tank up and running after this is over, when do I know it's safe to bring more fish home?

Sorry your having such issues with ich. I have been through it and lost fish in the past and it was a real blow.

I know you are treating meds but the nitrite reading of 2.0 is not going to be helping.

Your fish will be dieing in that toxicity so you need to do a 80% water change ASAP in my opinion to get that down.

Then do 50 % a day water changes and get it to 0. your cycle has gone out and is struggling to convert it all to nitrates.

That's what I was thinking as well. When I took the readings for this post, I about fell out of my chair. Didn't realize they were that out of whack! I knew they were going to be off, but dang. So basically these poor fish are being killed from all directions.

Don't beat yourself up about it. You are new, your learning and mistakes are going to be made. Everyone here will have been there.

The fact you have a strong nitrate reading is good and ammonia is 0. The nitrite will soon drop to 0 when your good bacteria in your filter, substrate E. C. T catch up with the bioload. its gunna take daily water changes and tests unfortunately.

Make sure you don't clean your filter or anything at this time so the good bacteria can be left to multiply.

I think your temp needs to be higher at least 80 to speed up the ich life cycle.

Put your temp up to about 84 degrees and add aquarium salt. If that does not work then use ich-x
