Ember Tetra Tank

I have a 10 gallon planted tank with 12 ember tetras and some amano shrimp. I have had the fish for 2 months and they are still quite pale for embers. Most of them are slightly orange but I can't figure out why they are not coloring up more. They also will not come to the surface and eat.

    Water parameters:
    Ammonia: 0
    Nitrate: <20
    PH 6.5-7
    Hardness: 80
    Water temp: 77-78F

At this moment, I am stumped. They do tend to hide in the plants and come out to the middle of the tank to eat sinking food.

    Any thoughts? f5e392b8979dacbe5c311dd72565c202.jpg

They may be young fish. I have embers in my 40B, and they are quite vibrant, but they didn't start out that way. Frankly, I was underwhelmed by them for months because they didn't look much like the photos I had seen. But they got there in the end.

The feeding behavior sounds normal to me. Mine wait for food to come to them as well.

A few of them are quite small. I asked for younger ones when my LFS ordered them. I trust the store, as it is locally known for carrying good stock and doing things right.
