Embarrassed When Buying Fish

Sometimes when I purchase fish for my tank or supplies I feel strange because I see other people stare at me weird and and I one time heard a boy say why is he buying fish and not something cool like a snake since he is a boy and that right kinda made me feel sad I mean I will never give up on this hobby it's just that it makes me feel embarrassed sometimes when I purchase fish from petstores fishstores though are ok when I buy fish from there it's just that when I go to petstores they think I'm weird when I call a client over to help me catch the fish I want but have any of you felt this way?

 

Ignore them, They don't matter at all.

 

Nope. But I'm used to it. I have hissing cockroaches and a one foot long 'giant scary snake that's gonna kill you OMG how do you have that in your room?!'. Forgive me for the run on sentence.

And everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I say how awesome pet rats are.


So...nope. I really don't care anymore. If I get more pet rats, they're going to ride on my shoulder with me whenever I go to the pet store. And the people who dislike that can go cling to their evil biting hamsters.

 

Who cares. What is important to you, is important to you. Other people, other interests.

However, if possible go to a real fish store. Plenty of fish nerds there and a more pleasant atmosphere being among like minded people

 

Does it really matter what Tom , Dick and Harry thinks?.. Keep doing you and that's what matters.

 

Don't feel embarrassed! I have friends who when they come to my house say things like:

You have fish tanks? (Not like, how cool, but like, why?!?!)
Another tank?
How many tanks do you have?
Are you done yet?
More fish?
Why don't you just throw a bass in there? (I live on a lake)
Are you going to get a Nemo fish? (I don't do saltwater)

And the list goes on. I just ignore them. I love my friends, and my husband is included in these people who think I'm nuts. But I do tanks for me, not anyone else. I've learned who to share the fish's names with and who not to.

You're young; someday you'll learn to ignore what people think. But just remember you are not the only young man in the world who keeps fish. You're in good company

 

fish time , us old fishkeepers were once young fish nerds. What they think doesn't matter, many will appreciate you and your fishkeeping knowledge.

 

But why should we care? All those "weird people" grew up to be important figures in our history. The more "weirder" we are, the better we are.

Because I'd rather be absolutely out of this world than identical to everyone in this world.

 

Your not weird, they're the weird ones for not being able to appreciate the beauty of tropical fish! When I had a LFS a group of my clients were H's Angels, and nobody called them weird! The website won't let me spell it out! I guess we need to be protected from all those bad words!

 

As many others have told you, pay no mind. You should not feel embarrassed about keeping fish if it makes you happy. Furthermore, just because you're a boy doesn't decide what kind of pet you should have. Everyone has a different opinion on "cool". As you age you'll learn that, as well as others' opinions not mattering as much. Prime example, horses are widely conceptualized as a "girl" pet. However, there are many men who want to be a horse racing jockey that simply can't because they are too large a load for their horse. Or how about ranchers that ride horses to herd cattle? Think they're all women? Take me. I'm a 26 year old male, and I for one love my 7 pet SNAILS. One year ago I never would have said that. If you get anything out of this though, let it be that you shouldn't let anyone bully you into being something you're not or into doing something that you don't want to do. It's your life. So live it.

I agree with everyone saying "who cares" It's your hobby and no one else's business. Obviously they sell fish for a reason, to sell them! I have a pet pig who sleeps inside (& out sometimes) and some people like it and others have the typical cliched remarks like "are you gonna eat him?" "A pig in the house? Ew" etc...I don't care .....anyway, be you and don't let anyone change that

while they are concentrating on what is or is not cool and what other people are doing around them you are concentrating on giving your fish the best home, hence the reason you are buying fish/fish supplies. Ignore them and let them say what they want. It doesn't matter what they think at all.

 

there is really nothing weird with buying fish and having a good looking aquarium. its just some people are not really into fishes as a hobby and more as a meal. anyway just ignore them. its what makes you happy they don't matter to be honest.

You should have asked why they have such a boring pet as a snake. They don't do much but lay around, and move around a little. Should also have asked how quickly do they get bored looking at their snake, and if they can spend hours looking at them and not get bored.

This is me to a tee... the first question I get is how do you have time to take care of all these fish tanks??
I only have two, setting up the third ( a 180 gallon). My mom, my sister, even husband think I am crazy. Lol!
But, to them it is a chore- I find it the opposite. Each fish is a fascination, where for others, fish just don't do much for them.

I only have one tank running (20 long), not counting quarantine. My Grandma recently learned about this, and was just like, "Isn't that a lot of work and money? How many fish you got? Don't get too many." Lol. She doesn't know I plan on setting up a 40 breeder and another 10 before long. Lol.
