(electric Green) Tetra Glofish

HI there everyone! Firstly, I'm new to this site and hoping I can get good/necessary info from here (as I assume I will! ). Little about me, I have a 5 gallon tank with a mix of fish/frog in there lol. I have an albino cory, a African dwarf frog & two electric green tetras (glofish). Have had the Cory & frog for nearly 2 years, & the tetras for going on 2 months now! One is full grown, the other is very small in comparison. Have had no issues regarding space/mix whatsoever, as all fish are completely healthy & swimming nicely.

Now, what brings me here is a concern regarding the smallest tetra of which idk is normal or not lol.. I have tried to research as much as I can on the matter & am coming up with nothing. So I figured I'd post and see what people may have to say as maybe there is "professionals" here who can help! My small tetra seems to be deformed on his/her head.. Could just be me but idk lol.. I will upload a picture. He/she does swim around as much as it hides and seems to have zero issues otherwise.. Also minorly swims sideways I should mention, sometimes.

Also, wondering if its strange they go all crazy & hide (just the tetras) when the light is turned on? Will they do this for a blue light also?

In captive bred fish many fish which are not perfect survive and are sold. This may not happen in the wild when conditions are tougher.

I think your fish is probably an imperfect individual which is lucky to be in your care.

As fish cannot close their eyes, switching on the light will be very uncomfortable to them and a great shock. Imagine if you were in your darkened room and the light was switched on and your eyes were taped open! Its like that.

My lights do not come on until the day has broken, or the room light has been switched on to at least give a half-light situation before the main light comes on in the tank.

There are some clever dimmer switches that can switch lights on gradually but as my tank is from the 1970s it doesn't have modern lighting.

Thank you for your response! Sadly after finishing up some house cleaning today I noticed I couldn't find the little guy, & seen he had gotten stuck in the filter r.I.p little fishy

I'm sorry to hear you lost your fish.

You have stocking issues if you would like to discuss them.

Thank you, & I'm open to hearing anything that could help me for future smaller fish. I had a net covering the filter, I suppose my partner removed it & forgot to put it back on.. Saddening

I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully in the future no one will forget.

As far as your stock, cories are schooling fish and really need to be kept in groups of 6+, and they also require a 20 gallon long tank.
The frog is okay in the 5 gallon as long as it is getting food, however, normally you can only keep one frog in a 5 gallon.
Your glofish (assuming they are the white skirt tetras that are colored?) are really too big for your 5 gallon as well and are schooling fish like the cories.

If possible, I would highly recommend getting a 20 gallon long tank and getting your current fish some more friends.

Oh really? Well.. This whole time I thought it was fine as the people I bought it from told me totally different info regarding my cory.. (Big Al's is where I've purchased them). I was wrong regarding my Cory not that it is important lol.. I've actually had him nearly 3 years now not 2. The 5 gallon tank is bigger then what I had started with & I thought he was totally fine all this time.. Good to know! I have been recently looking to purchase a larger tank so I'll definitely make it a priority knowing that & add some more friends for him & the tetras! & I was told the tetra I've purchased is a glofish tetra, unsure if that is the same as a white skirt tetra as they look offfley similar in shape but different in color.. I am not as informed as my partner is (he is the main caretaker & buyer he just doesn't reach out for help so I am lol) so I could be clueless.

Not many big stores have much information regarding aquariums/fish. Glofish are usually just white skirt tetras that have been dyed I believe. Just make sure you have a bigger tank before adding any more fish

That's craziness, you'd think they'd have knowledgeable people working with them for this kind of stuff! I totally will follow your advice, thanks so much for your help!

Yes, you would think lol. I know there was someone on here who was told a betta would drown if kept in a tank bigger than 5 gallons or something crazy lol. I don't think I've ever talked to one knowledgeable employee at a pet store regarding fish. It's much better to come here before you talk to anyone from a store.

My local fish store is a family run business and they are very knowledgeable in fish keeping. I trust them loads. Others...I won't name...aren't very good and are in it for the money

I can back up the claim that many people in pet stores have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to fish. I work in a pet store that sells fish and learned quickly that many people I worked with didn’t know a betta from a Jaguar cichlid (obviously over exaggerating but it was bad) so I decided to learn everything I could about fish and try to teach my co-workers about fish whenever I can. The reason for this post is to say to come here for fish advice, people in pet stores are trained for dogs and cats and most don’t know about the complexity it takes to care for fish.
