I got this fish from a previous owner when he decided to change stock of his tank. I introduced them in my tank and had the aquarium lights of for the first day to reduce stress (light in the room was on). Next day when I looking a bit closer on the fish in good lighting I first noticed to popeye and assumed it could be physical after transport I also saw a slight shift in colour on the left side. The next day when I inspected the fish the spot had turned brownish and the scales started to stand slightly.

I believe your initial conclusion is the most likely answer. Physical damage & stress due to removal from the previous owners tank, transportation & acclimation into yours.
Subdued lighting, clean water & good nutrition is about all that can be done for the EBA.
